SENATE CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
Approving the selection of Daniel Kahikina Akaka to be inducted into the aloha order of merit.
WHEREAS, Daniel Kahikina Akaka is a dedicated public servant and educator, who has represented the State of Hawaii in the United States House of Representatives from 1976 to 1990, and in the United States Senate from 1990 through 2012; and
WHEREAS, Daniel Kahikina Akaka embodies the Aloha Spirit, actively demonstrating the values of akahai, lokahi, olu‘olu, ha‘aha‘a, and ahonui in his deeds and interactions with local, national, and international leaders and cross-cultural friendships; and
WHEREAS, the United States Senate and executive leadership have continuously turned to Daniel Kahikina Akaka, Hawaii's first Native Hawaiian to serve in the United States Senate, to promote lokahi above partisanship, thereby demonstrating that Native Hawaiian values can serve to guide behavior and interactions, even in the most influential centers of power in the United States; and
WHEREAS, Daniel Kahikina Akaka has worked tirelessly throughout his congressional career to preserve natural resources, thereby demonstrating the Hawaiian value of malama ‘aina; and
WHEREAS, prior to his election to Congress, Daniel Kahikina Akaka served as the Hawaii Director of the Office of Economic Opportunity, which focused on programs to improve access to education and eliminate poverty in the State; and
WHEREAS, Daniel Kahikina Akaka influenced generations of students as an educator who taught at public and private elementary, intermediate, and high schools in Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, Daniel Kahikina Akaka has brought honor to the State of Hawaii through his service in the United States Army Corps of Engineers during World War II, achievements on behalf of veterans during his tenure as Chairman of the United States Senate Committee on Veterans' Affairs, and tireless efforts to share the Aloha Spirit and its meanings throughout the world; and
WHEREAS, this body established the Aloha Order of Merit in 1993 to honor certain individuals, and section 5-7.6, Hawaii Revised Statutes, provides in relevant part that "[h]onorees shall have:
(1) Achieved national or international recognition in their field either by a single event or by the totality of their work that has been either pioneering in their field or that has been outstanding in the long-term; and
(2) (A) Contributed to the attainment of statehood for Hawaii;
(B) Devoted themselves to the betterment of the State, embodying the concept of the Aloha Spirit;
(C) Provided extraordinary service to the State; or
(D) Brought honor to the State"; and
WHEREAS, Daniel Kahikina Akaka has achieved national and international recognition as a statesman through the totality of his work, which has been outstanding; and
WHEREAS, Daniel Kahikina Akaka has devoted himself to the betterment of the State while embodying the concept of the Aloha Spirit, has provided extraordinary service to the State, and has brought honor to the State; and
WHEREAS, Daniel Kahikina Akaka meets all requirements necessary to be inducted as a member of the Aloha Order of Merit; and

WHEREAS, thank you deeply statesman Daniel Kahikina Akaka for your everlasting love to all the people; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-sixth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2012, the House of Representatives concurring, that this body approve the selection of Daniel Kahikina Akaka to be inducted into the Aloha Order of Merit; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Office of the Governor and Senator Daniel Kahikina Akaka.
