THE SENATE

S.R. NO.

50

TWENTY-NINTH LEGISLATURE, 2018

STATE OF HAWAII

SENATE RESOLUTION

requesting hawaiian airlines to consider offering student discounts to high school students on interisland flights.

WHEREAS, in 2017, Hawaiian Airlines carried roughly 11,500,000 passengers and set new records for fourth quarter and full-year revenue in 2017, with revenue rising by ten percent from 2016; and

WHEREAS, according to the 2016 State of Hawaii Data Book, the average regular fare ticket price in 2016 for interisland flights on Hawaiian Airlines was $182.40; and

WHEREAS, while Hawaiian Airlines has grown to the largest airline in Hawaii today, the company required financial assistance from the State in the past; and

WHEREAS, in 1993, the Legislature passed Act 332, Session Laws of Hawaii 1993, to assist Hawaii interisland air carriers, such as Hawaiian Airlines, whose operations and revenues had been adversely affected by the reduced number of visitors at the time by authorizing the Director of Business, Economic Development, and Tourism to guarantee loans from private lending institutions of up to $12,600,000; and

WHEREAS, at that time, the Legislature found and declared that the issuance of loan guarantees was in the public interest and for the public health, safety, and general welfare of the State; and

WHEREAS, Hawaiian Airlines has previously offered student discounts on interisland flights in the past, but discontinued offering student discounts due to funding reasons; and

WHEREAS, many high school students travel for school activities, such as speech and debate competitions, art and music events, and athletic competitions; and

WHEREAS, offering high school students discounts may encourage them to travel more throughout Hawaii, as travel enriches the mind and promotes a deeper understanding of culture and civics; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-ninth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2018, that Hawaiian Airlines is requested to consider offering student discounts to high school students on interisland flights; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Chair of the Board of Directors of Hawaiian Airlines and Chief Executive Officer of Hawaiian Airlines.
