                    HOUSE RESOLUTION NO.
BY KELLEY, MEYER, WOLFE, GAINES, and BROWN=POWERS
1 1 A Resolution urging designation of the Iowa brook trout
1 2 as the official state fish for the State of Iowa.
1 3 WHEREAS, the Iowa brook trout (salvelinus
1 4 fontinalis) is a fish native to Iowa that is found
1 5 almost exclusively in the northeastern portion of the
1 6 state in select spring=fed streams; and
1 7 WHEREAS, brook trout are the only trout species
1 8 native to Iowa; and
1 9 WHEREAS, the Iowa brook trout is readily
1 10 recognizable and distinguishable from other trout by
1 11 two main characteristics: vivid white lines on the
1 12 front or leading edge of the lower fins, and light
1 13 wormy streaks or mottling called vermiculations on
1 14 the darker background of the trout's top portion or
  1 15 back; and
1 16 WHEREAS, a male Iowa brook trout at spawning time
1 17 is among the most beautiful of all fish with deep
1 18 red=yellow=crimson coloration along the belly and
1 19 numerous red and pale yellow spots sometimes surrounded
1 20 by a blue=colored circle on its sides; and
1 21 WHEREAS, the Iowa brook trout's beautiful coloration
1 22 and scarcity add immeasurably to its aesthetic
  1 23 value; and
1 24 WHEREAS, the normal length of an Iowa brook trout
1 25 during the third year of life is 10 to 13 inches; and
1 26 WHEREAS, an Iowa brook trout that weighs over one
1 27 pound is considered a trophy; and
1 28 WHEREAS, a female Iowa brook trout matures at about
2 1 two years of age while most males mature during the
2 2 first year of life; and
2 3 WHEREAS, life expectancy of the Iowa brook trout is
2 4 seldom longer than three years; and
2 5 WHEREAS, natural reproduction of the Iowa brook
2 6 trout is presently limited to only a few streams in the
  2 7 state; and
2 8 WHEREAS, in order to survive, the Iowa brook
2 9 trout must have the coldest and cleanest of stream
  2 10 conditions; and
2 11 WHEREAS, continual pollution, heavy siltation, or
2 12 other water quality degradation of Iowa's streams will
2 13 extirpate the species forever; and
2 14 WHEREAS, disappearance of the Iowa brook trout will
2 15 foretell the disappearance of the last of our state's
2 16 purest coldwater streams; and
2 17 WHEREAS, the Iowa brook trout is the perfect symbol
2 18 of our state's ongoing efforts to save and reestablish
2 19 healthy waters; NOW THEREFORE,
2 20 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,
2 21 That the House of Representatives supports efforts to
2 22 preserve and to reestablish healthy waters and to raise
2 23 awareness of all aquatic species in the state by urging
2 24 that the Iowa brook trout be designated as the official
2 25 state fish for the State of Iowa.
