  1 An Act relating to the operation of the state mental health

  3 BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF IOWA:

  1  1    Section 1.  Section 226.1, subsection 1, Code 2017, is
  1  2 amended to read as follows:
  1  3    1.  a.  The state hospitals for persons with mental illness
  1  4 shall be designated as follows be operated and funded by the
  1  5 state on a year=round basis in the following four locations:
  1  6    a.  (1)  Mental Health Institute, Mount Pleasant, Iowa.
  1  7    b.  (2)  Mental Health Institute, Independence, Iowa.
  1  8    c.  (3)  Mental Health Institute, Clarinda, Iowa.
  1  9    d.  (4)  Mental Health Institute, Cherokee, Iowa.
  1 10    b.  Each state hospital shall serve twenty=five counties.
  1 11                           EXPLANATION
  1 12 The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with
  1 13 the explanation's substance by the members of the general assembly.
  1 14    This bill relates to the operation of the state mental
  1 15 health institutes.  Under current Code, the state hospitals
  1 16 for persons with mental illness are designated as mental
  1 17 health institutes to be located in Iowa in Mount Pleasant,
  1 18 Independence, Clarinda, and Cherokee.
  1 19    The bill amends current law to provide that the state mental
  1 20 health institutes shall be operated and funded by the state on
  1 21 a year=round basis in the same locations and that each state
  1 22 mental health institute shall serve 25 counties.
