Bill Title: Amends the Law Enforcement and Fire Fighting Medal of Honor Act. Provides that the term of office of each Committee member is abolished on October 1, 2023. Provides that the terms of the Committee members shall be as follows: one of the members shall be appointed for a term of one year, one member shall be appointed for terms of 2 years, and 2 members shall be appointed for terms of 3 years. Provides that thereafter, the Committee members shall hold office for 4 years. Provides that the Illinois State Police shall provide administrative support to the Committee.

1 | AN ACT concerning State government.
| ||||||
2 | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
| ||||||
3 | represented in the General Assembly:
| ||||||
4 | Section 5. The Law Enforcement and Fire Fighting Medal of | ||||||
5 | Honor Act is amended by changing Section 2001 as follows:
| ||||||
6 | (20 ILCS 3985/2001) (from Ch. 127, par. 3852-1)
| ||||||
7 | Sec. 2001.
There is created the Law Enforcement Medal of | ||||||
8 | Honor
Committee, referred to in this Article as the Committee. | ||||||
9 | The Committee
shall consist of the Director of the Illinois | ||||||
10 | State Police , who shall serve as chair , the
Superintendent of | ||||||
11 | the Chicago Police Department, the Executive Director of
the | ||||||
12 | Illinois Law Enforcement Training
Standards Board,
and the | ||||||
13 | following persons appointed by the Governor: a sheriff, a | ||||||
14 | chief of
police from other than Chicago, a representative of a | ||||||
15 | statewide law
enforcement officer organization and a retired | ||||||
16 | Illinois law enforcement
officer. Of the appointed members, | ||||||
17 | the sheriff and police chief shall each
serve a 2-year term and | ||||||
18 | the organization representative and retired officer
shall each | ||||||
19 | serve a one-year term. The Governor shall appoint initial
| ||||||
20 | members within 3 months of the effective date of this Act. | ||||||
21 | Notwithstanding any provision in this
Section to the contrary, | ||||||
22 | the term of office of each
Committee member is
abolished on | ||||||
23 | October 1, 2023.

1 | on or after the effective date of this amendatory
Act of the | ||||||
2 | 103rd General Assembly shall be as follows: one of
the members | ||||||
3 | shall be appointed for a term of one year,
one member shall be | ||||||
4 | appointed for a term of 2 years, and 2 members shall be
| ||||||
5 | appointed for terms of 3 years. Thereafter, the Committee | ||||||
6 | members
shall hold office for 4 years. The Governor shall | ||||||
7 | appoint these members within 3 months of the effective date of | ||||||
8 | this amendatory
Act of the 103rd General Assembly.
| ||||||
9 | Members of the Committee shall serve without compensation | ||||||
10 | but shall be
reimbursed for actual expenses incurred in the | ||||||
11 | performance of their duties
from funds appropriated to the | ||||||
12 | Office of the Governor for such purpose. The Illinois State | ||||||
13 | Police shall provide administrative support to the Committee.
