HOUSE RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, U.S. Route 62 is the only east-west U.S. route
that connects Mexico and Canada; U.S. 62 runs from El Paso,
Texas to Niagara Falls, New York within America's borders; and
WHEREAS, A national effort to dedicate U.S. 62 in its
entirety as the "National Veterans Highway" has been undertaken
by several veterans groups in numerous states along the route;
the groups have experienced success in the designation of this
route in other states; and
WHEREAS, U.S. 62 runs through the southern tip of Illinois,
connecting Missouri to our west with Kentucky to our east;
although Illinois has the shortest segment of U.S. 62 among the
10 states it touches, it is proper to dedicate this piece of
the road to gain unanimity on the route; and
WHEREAS, In honor of the thousands of veterans who so nobly
serve the United States, it is fitting to dedicate this
significant route through the United States as the "National
Veterans Highway" as a humble gesture of appreciation for their
service; and
WHEREAS, Our servicemen and women continue to risk and
sacrifice a great deal, both at home and abroad; this small act

would show some part of Illinois' respect and appreciation for
our veterans; therefore, be it
RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
we designate the segment of U.S. 62 that touches the southern
tip of our state as the "National Veterans Highway" and
encourage the 9 other states along the route to adopt similar
measures to show support for veterans groups and the men and
women serving our country today; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation
is requested to erect, consistent with State and federal
regulations, signs displaying the ceremonial designation of
U.S. 62 as the "National Veterans Highway"; and be it further
RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
delivered to the Secretary of the Illinois Department of
Transportation and the Illinois chapters of the Veterans of
Foreign Wars, the American Legion, the American Veterans, the
United Service Organizations, the Disabled American Veterans,
the Korean War Veterans Association, the Paralyzed Veterans of
America, and the Vietnam Veterans of America as a symbol of our
esteem and respect.
