HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, U.S. Route 62 is the only east-west U.S. route
3that connects Mexico and Canada; U.S. 62 runs from El Paso,
4Texas to Niagara Falls, New York within America's borders; and
5 WHEREAS, A national effort to dedicate U.S. 62 in its
6entirety as the "National Veterans Highway" has been undertaken
7by several veterans groups in numerous states along the route;
8the groups have experienced success in the designation of this
9route in other states; and
10 WHEREAS, U.S. 62 runs through the southern tip of Illinois,
11connecting Missouri to our west with Kentucky to our east;
12although Illinois has the shortest segment of U.S. 62 among the
1310 states it touches, it is proper to dedicate this piece of
14the road to gain unanimity on the route; and
15 WHEREAS, In honor of the thousands of veterans who so nobly
16serve the United States, it is fitting to dedicate this
17significant route through the United States as the "National
18Veterans Highway" as a humble gesture of appreciation for their
19service; and
20 WHEREAS, Our servicemen and women continue to risk and
21sacrifice a great deal, both at home and abroad; this small act

1would show some part of Illinois' respect and appreciation for
2our veterans; therefore, be it
3 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
4NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
5we designate the segment of U.S. 62 that touches the southern
6tip of our state as the "National Veterans Highway" and
7encourage the 9 other states along the route to adopt similar
8measures to show support for veterans groups and the men and
9women serving our country today; and be it further
10 RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation
11is requested to erect, consistent with State and federal
12regulations, signs displaying the ceremonial designation of
13U.S. 62 as the "National Veterans Highway"; and be it further
14 RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
15delivered to the Secretary of the Illinois Department of
16Transportation and the Illinois chapters of the Veterans of
17Foreign Wars, the American Legion, the American Veterans, the
18United Service Organizations, the Disabled American Veterans,
19the Korean War Veterans Association, the Paralyzed Veterans of
20America, and the Vietnam Veterans of America as a symbol of our
21esteem and respect.
