1 | AMENDMENT TO SENATE BILL 621

2 | AMENDMENT NO. ______. Amend Senate Bill 621 by replacing | ||||||
3 | everything after the enacting clause with the following:

4 | "Section 5. The School Code is amended by adding Section | ||||||
5 | 10-22.22e as follows:
| ||||||
6 | (105 ILCS 5/10-22.22e new) | ||||||
7 | Sec. 10-22.22e. Joint operation of elementary science and | ||||||
8 | mathematics magnet school. Notwithstanding any other provision | ||||||
9 | of law to the contrary, 2 or more school districts may, when in | ||||||
10 | their judgment the interest of the districts and of the | ||||||
11 | students therein will be best served, jointly operate, either | ||||||
12 | directly or through an institution of higher education located | ||||||
13 | in a municipality whose geographic boundaries include areas | ||||||
14 | served by each district, an elementary science and mathematics | ||||||
15 | magnet school. This magnet school may (i) restrict attendance | ||||||
16 | to only residents of a municipality shared by the districts and |

1 | (ii) select students for enrollment based on admission criteria | ||||||
2 | that focuses on academic proficiency in science and | ||||||
3 | mathematics; however, in no case shall the magnet school | ||||||
4 | discriminate on the basis of disability, race, creed, color, | ||||||
5 | gender, national origin, religion, ancestry, marital status, | ||||||
6 | or need for special education services in the establishment of | ||||||
7 | its attendance boundaries or in the selection of students for | ||||||
8 | enrollment. ".
