1 | SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, It is fitting to honor those who have given their | ||||||
3 | lives in service to their community; and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, From a young age, Officer Brian Pierce Jr. looked | ||||||
5 | to serve his community, including with the Raymond/Harvel Fire | ||||||
6 | Explorer program, the ISP Junior Police Academy, the Christian | ||||||
7 | County Drug and Alcohol Task Force, and the Elkville Fire | ||||||
8 | Department; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, After graduating from Elkville High School, | ||||||
10 | Officer Pierce became the trainer and treasurer of the | ||||||
11 | Elkville Fire Department as well as a correctional officer | ||||||
12 | with the Menard Correctional Facility; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, In 2017, Officer Pierce moved to Makanda, where | ||||||
14 | he joined the Makanda Township Fire Department; while there, | ||||||
15 | he spent every Monday night training younger firefighters; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, In 2019, Officer Pierce assisted the mayor of | ||||||
17 | Spillertown in constructing a police department that had not | ||||||
18 | existed for ten years, which included assisting in applying | ||||||
19 | for funding and grants and helping with day to day operations; | ||||||

1 | WHEREAS, Officer Pierce became a police officer in | ||||||
2 | Brooklyn and was killed in the line of duty on August 4, 2021 | ||||||
3 | while deploying stop sticks to halt a vehicle fleeing police; | ||||||
4 | and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, At the time of his death, Officer Pierce was | ||||||
6 | survived by his parents, a sister, and a niece and nephew; | ||||||
7 | therefore, be it

8 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL | ||||||
9 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF | ||||||
10 | REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate the | ||||||
11 | section of Illinois Route 37 from Longstreet Road to | ||||||
12 | Prosperity Road as it passes Spillertown as the "Officer Brian | ||||||
13 | Pierce Jr. Memorial Highway"; and be it further
| ||||||
14 | RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation
| ||||||
15 | is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with
| ||||||
16 | State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs
| ||||||
17 | giving notice of the name "Officer Brian Pierce Jr. Memorial | ||||||
18 | Highway"; and be it further

19 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
20 | presented to the family of Officer Pierce and the Secretary of | ||||||
21 | Transportation.
