2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | ||||||
3 | to learn of the death of Myron J. "Mike" Sholem, who passed | ||||||
4 | away on May 19, 2022; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Mike Sholem was born in St. Louis, Missouri to | ||||||
6 | Jerome J. and Faye Siegal Sholem on February 23, 1924; he was | ||||||
7 | raised in Champaign and attended both University Laboratory | ||||||
8 | High School and Champaign High School; he served in the U.S. | ||||||
9 | Army Medical Corps during World War II and then attended the | ||||||
10 | University of Illinois, where he was a member of the Zeta Beta | ||||||
11 | Tau fraternity; he married Sonya Ades in Louisville, Kentucky | ||||||
12 | on August 29, 1950; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Mike Sholem was active in the Champaign business | ||||||
14 | community; he started his career after college by joining his | ||||||
15 | father in the family business, Sholem's Shoes, which was | ||||||
16 | established by his grandfather, William Sholem, in Paris, | ||||||
17 | Illinois in 1872; later he was joined at the company by his | ||||||
18 | brother, Stanford Sholem, and the Sholem brothers worked side | ||||||
19 | by side for over 25 years as they expanded the business until | ||||||
20 | its sale in 1979; and

21 | WHEREAS, Mike Sholem changed his focus to family farm | ||||||
22 | management and real estate development; he kept a small family |

1 | office in downtown Champaign, where he managed his family | ||||||
2 | business interests; he always found time to join his daily | ||||||
3 | coffee group and lunch group for a spirited discussion of all | ||||||
4 | major local, national, and world events; he was an active | ||||||
5 | member of the board of the Champaign National Bank, Mercy | ||||||
6 | Hospital, and the Champaign Salvation Army; he was also a | ||||||
7 | member of the Champaign Rotary Club, the Champaign Country | ||||||
8 | Club, the University of Illinois Foundation, and Sinai Temple; | ||||||
9 | and

10 | WHEREAS, Mike Sholem had an active mind and incredible | ||||||
11 | memory, with the ability to recount specific details of his | ||||||
12 | childhood, career, personal travels, and his winters with | ||||||
13 | Sonya in Longboat Key, Florida, California, and Hawaii; some | ||||||
14 | of his greatest joys revolved around reading the Wall Street | ||||||
15 | Journal from cover to cover each day and sharing the day's | ||||||
16 | events with his two sons and five grandchildren; he loved | ||||||
17 | getting calls from his family and trying to keep up with the | ||||||
18 | details of their various business activities; he was an avid | ||||||
19 | sports fan and rarely missed a televised St. Louis Cardinals | ||||||
20 | baseball game or any Illinois football or basketball game; his | ||||||
21 | impressive longevity is attributed by some to his consistent | ||||||
22 | diet of Steak 'n Shake burgers, fries, and milkshakes for most | ||||||
23 | of his adult life; and

24 | WHEREAS, Mike Sholem was preceded in death by his parents |

1 | and his brother and sister-in-law, William and Connie Sholem; | ||||||
2 | and
| ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, Mike Sholem is survived by his wife of over 71 | ||||||
4 | years, Sonya; his sons, David (Jan) and Barry (Frankie) | ||||||
5 | Sholem; his grandchildren, Jamie (Mariel) Sholem, Katie | ||||||
6 | (Scott) Arnoldy, Caroline (Ben) Weinberg, Jordan Sholem, and | ||||||
7 | Grant Sholem; his great-grandchildren, Jackson, Juliette, | ||||||
8 | Annabel, Libby, Sidney James, and John; and his brother and | ||||||
9 | sister-in-law, Stanford "Tank" and Susan Sholem; therefore, be | ||||||
10 | it

11 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL | ||||||
12 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
13 | Myron J. "Mike" Sholem and extend our sincere condolences to | ||||||
14 | his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | ||||||
15 | further

16 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
17 | presented to the family of Mike Sholem as an expression of our | ||||||
18 | deepest sympathy.
