SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Betty Ann Maguire of Virden, who
4passed away on July 11, 2024; and
5 WHEREAS, Betty Maguire, the daughter of Harold and Mary
6(Eater) Qualls, was born in Carlinville on October 14, 1940;
7she graduated from Virden High School in 1958; she married
8Richard "Dick" Maguire in Virden on September 27, 1959; and
9 WHEREAS, Betty Maguire worked for Horace Mann and the
10offices of the Macoupin County State's Attorney, the State's
11Attorney Appellate Prosecutor, the Sangamon County State's
12Attorney, and the Governor; and
13 WHEREAS, Betty Maguire was dedicated to serving her
14community, beginning when she joined the Virden School Board
15in the late 1970s; she served as an alderperson for Ward 3 of
16Virden for numerous years, and she often served as an election
17judge at the polls; she also served on the Virden Park Board
18and the Virden Queen Pageant and as a judge in cheerleading
19competitions at Virden Middle School, now North Mac Middle
20School; and
21 WHEREAS, Betty Maguire further gave her time to her

1community through decorating the local park for Christmas and
2serving as a Christmas parade marshal; she also provided for
3the installation of American flags on all the mailboxes in her
4neighborhood every 4th of July; and
5 WHEREAS, Betty Maguire was honored for her community
6service by being named the Virden Citizen of the Year in 2017;
7and
8 WHEREAS, Betty Maguire loved living in Virden and always
9took great pride in giving back to her community; and
10 WHEREAS, Betty Maguire was preceded in death by her
11parents; her husband; her granddaughter, Brett Ann Maguire;
12her brothers, Homer, Ronnie, Howard, Wayne, Loren, and Larry;
13and her sisters, Ethel, Nettie, Henrietta, Maxine, and Ruth;
14and
15 WHEREAS, Betty Maguire is survived by her son, Rick (Jane)
16Maguire; her daughters, Teri (Rick) Flowers and Andrea Murphy;
17her grandchildren, Butch (Jaela) Flowers, Kassi (Jeremy)
18White, Lexy (Sam) Ghrist, Devon (Taylor) Murphy, Kelsey
19Murphy, Skyler (Alec) Quandt, and Luke Maguire; 10
20great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews;
21therefore, be it
