RESOLUTION
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION honoring the Center Grove
High School girls softball team.
Whereas, On June 13, 2009, at Ben Davis High School in
Indianapolis, the Center Grove High School girls softball
team topped off a 33-3 season with a 2-0 victory over
Harrison High School, West Lafayette, in the Indiana High
School Athletic Association's Class 4A championship game;
Whereas, The Trojans scored the only runs of the game in
the third inning to claim their fifth state championship;
Whereas, The fourth-ranked Trojans have made 11
appearances in the state championship, winning in 1986,
1995, 1998 (3A), and 2003 (3A);
Whereas, Senior pitchers Sarah Franklin and Emily
Gwaltney performed flawlessly in the championship game;
Whereas, Starter Sarah Franklin allowed only one hit and
one walk and reliever Emily Gwaltney struck out five of the
six hitters she faced;
Whereas, Ranked No. 1 in preseason, the Trojans had 26
shutouts over the entire season and allowed only 18 runs in
36 games;
Whereas, Head coach Russ Milligan credits the seniors for
the year's success, stating that they "lead by example"; and
Whereas, Outstanding accomplishments such as this deserve special recognition: Therefore,
SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly congratulates the
Center Grove Trojans on their fifth IHSAA Class 4A softball state
championship and wishes them continued success in all their future
endeavors.
SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of
Representatives transmit a copy of this resolution to all team members;
head coach Russ Milligan; assistant coaches John Moran, Amy
Wingler, Nathan Williamson, and Andrea Teevan; student manager Jon
Clawson; athletic director Jon Zwitt; assistant athletic director Doug
Schornick; Principal Matt Shockley; and Superintendent Dr. Steven
Stephanoff.
