HOUSE BILL No. 5121

     A bill to amend 1972 PA 230, entitled

 

"Stille-DeRossett-Hale single state construction code act,"

 

(MCL 125.1501 to 125.1531) by adding section 4g.

 

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:

 

     Sec. 4g. (1) The director shall promulgate rules that

 

establish standards and requirements for the installation of a

 

symbol on each affected building with lightweight construction. The

 

purpose of the symbols is to warn individuals conducting fire

 

suppression or other emergency operations of the lightweight

 

construction. The rules must be promulgated pursuant to the

 

administrative procedures act of 1969, 1969 PA 306, MCL 24.201 to

 

24.328, by 180 days after the effective date of this section.

 

     (2) The rules under subsection (1) shall include, but need not

 

be limited to, all of the following:

 


     (a) The dimensions, design, and color of the symbols, which

 

shall be as prescribed by the International Code Council's

 

"International Fire Code".

 

     (b) A requirement that, if construction of the affected

 

building is completed on or after the effective date of the rules,

 

the symbol be installed by the owner of the affected building by

 

the completion of construction or by 1 year after that effective

 

date, whichever is later.

 

     (c) A requirement that, if construction of the affected

 

building was completed before the effective date of the rules, the

 

symbol be installed by the owner of the affected building within 5

 

years after that effective date.

 

     (3) As used in this section:

 

     (a) "Affected building" means a multifamily dwelling of 3 or

 

more stories, a commercial building, or an industrial building.

 

     (b) "Lightweight construction" means construction of any part

 

of the roof or floor supporting systems from engineered or

 

lightweight prefabricated materials made from wood, composite

 

lumber, wood by-products, or cold-formed steel.

 

     Enacting section 1. This amendatory act takes effect 90 days

 

after the date it is enacted into law.
