SENATE BILL NO. 390

April 27, 2021, Introduced by Senators SCHMIDT, OUTMAN, LASATA and VICTORY and referred to the Committee on Education and Career Readiness.

A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled

"The revised school code,"

(MCL 380.1 to 380.1852) by adding section 1280h.

the people of the state of michigan enact:

Sec. 1280h. (1) It is the intent of the legislature to appropriate funding for the implementation and evaluation of the Preschool Reading Corps, K3 Reading Corps, and Math Corps components of the Michigan Education Corps.

(2) A school district, intermediate school district, or public school academy shall not retain the services of the Michigan Education Corps unless the Michigan Education Corps meets both of the following:

(a) Aligns the Preschool Reading Corps, K3 Reading Corps, and Math Corps with state academic standards for reading and math, as applicable.

(b) Utilizes funded AmeriCorps members or equivalently qualified individuals who are trained to provide a data-based problem-solving model of literacy and math instruction for pupils in preschool, as part of the Preschool Reading Corps, pupils in grades K to 3, as part of the K3 Reading Corps, and pupils in grades 4 to 8, as part of the Math Corps, who are not proficient in reading and math or are at risk of becoming not proficient in reading and math.

Enacting section 1. This amendatory act takes effect 90 days after the date it is enacted into law.
