            Senators Jansen and Warren offered the following resolution:

            Senate Resolution No. 91.

            A resolution recognizing the efforts of the Legislators Building Communities Program and commemorating October 8, 2013, as Legislators Building Communities Day.

Whereas, It is with the deepest respect that we honor the efforts of the many organizations that have dedicated their efforts to meet the housing and community economic development needs in our state through the Legislators Building Communities Program; and

Whereas, With gratitude, we salute the broad-based coalition of agencies, associations, and organizations that have worked on this effort. These include Habitat for Humanity of Michigan (73) affiliates; Community Economic Development Association of Michigan (CEDAM) and its nearly 200 member organizations; Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA); and other statewide and regional organizations and their members, including Community Development Advocates of Detroit (CDAD), Michigan Coalition Against Homelessness, Community enCompass, Corporation for Supportive Housing, Michigan Housing Council, FiveCAP, Inc., Michigan Historic Preservation Network, Michigan Municipal League, Michigan Association of Realtors, Michigan Association of Counties, Home Builders Association of Michigan, American Planning Association of Michigan, Michigan Coalition to End Domestic and Sexual Violence, and  Michigan Community Action Agencies; and

Whereas, The work these efforts promote is commendable.  Neighborhood improvement projects foster pride and community spirit, while demolitions and deconstructions reduce blight and increase safety.  Downtown development projects create healthy and vibrant downtown districts and livable communities; and

Whereas, Through the accomplishments of the coalition, in 2013, more than 75 Michigan legislators have participated in the Legislators Building Communities Program by volunteering on projects throughout the state; now, therefore, be it

Resolved by the Senate, That with highest respect and gratitude, we recognize the efforts of the Legislators Building Communities Program; and be it further

Resolved, That we commemorate October 8, 2013, as the Legislators Building Communities Commemoration Day. It is a day when legislators, advocacy groups, and the public can celebrate the completion of legislator volunteer projects in or near their legislative districts, while showcasing hundreds of local housing and community economic development efforts that will make Michigan a safe, healthy, and welcoming place to live; and be it further

Resolved, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to Habitat for Humanity of Michigan, Michigan State Housing Development Authority, and Community Economic Development Association of Michigan as a reflection of our gratitude.
