1.4animal research organization;proposing coding for new law in Minnesota

1.6BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:
1.7 Section 1. [136A.221] RESEARCH DOGS AND CATS.
1.8(a) A higher education research facility that receives public money, including
1.9tax-exempt status, or a facility that provides research in collaboration with a higher
1.10education facility that confines dogs or cats for science or research purposes and plans on
1.11destroying a dog or cat used for science or research purposes, must first offer the dog or
1.12cat to an animal rescue organization. A facility that is required to offer dogs or cats to an
1.13animal rescue organization under this section may enter into an agreement with the animal
1.14rescue organization to protect the facility.
1.15(b) For the purposes of this section, "animal rescue organization" means any
1.16nonprofit organization incorporated for the purpose of rescuing animals in need and
1.17finding permanent, adoptive homes for the animals.
