1.1A Senate resolution
1.2congratulating Navy Reserve Sailors from the state of Minnesota.
1.3WHEREAS, since the birth of our great nation, brave citizens have answered the call
1.4to service at sea, from the proposition of a national naval militia by Thomas Jefferson in
1.51805, through the Civil War which saw these units augmented in support of the Navy, to the
1.6Spanish-American War in 1898 in which 4,215 militia men supported the Navy; and
1.7WHEREAS, in 1915 Congress officially established the Federal Navy Reserve; and
1.8WHEREAS, for the last 100 years since the official establishment of the Navy Reserve,
1.9Navy Reserve Sailors have participated in every conflict, with more than 300,000 serving in
1.10World War I, more than two million serving in World War II including former Presidents John
1.11F. Kennedy and George H.W. Bush, 130,000 serving in Korea, one out of every seven sailors
1.12serving in Vietnam, over 22,000 mobilizing for the first Gulf War, and 1,500 serving in Bosnia
1.13and Kosovo; and
1.14WHEREAS, with over 70,000 Navy Reserve Sailors mobilized since September 2001 to
1.15support the Global War on Terrorism, the Navy Reserve of today is ready, trained, and aligned and
1.16integrated with the Active Duty Force; and
1.17WHEREAS, the mission of the Navy Reserve is to provide strategic depth and deliver
1.18operational capabilities to our Navy and Marine Corps team, and Joint Forces, from peace
1.19to war; and
1.20WHEREAS, Navy Reserve Sailors are patriots who balance the demands of family,
1.21community, civilian employment, and military readiness, hailing from local communities in every
1.22state representing the interests of our nation, connected to the American people and embodying
1.23the spirit of the American ideal; and
1.24WHEREAS, the state of Minnesota has 1,139 actively serving Navy Reserve Sailors and
1.25Marines operating out of the Navy Operational Support Center in Minneapolis; and
1.26WHEREAS, the Navy Reserve in Minnesota has a long and distinguished history of
1.27service including sailors who drilled and served aboard the USS Paducah in Duluth; and
1.28WHEREAS, the distinguished history of service by Navy Reservists in Minnesota was
1.29highlighted by the sailors from St. Paul, Minnesota, who while serving aboard the USS Ward
1.30on December 7, 1941, and patrolling off the entrance to Pearl Harbor used the #3 gun now
1.31memorialized on the Minnesota Capitol lawn to fire the first shot of WWII;
1.32NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
1.33hereby salutes the valuable contributions of Navy Reserve Sailors from the state of Minnesota.
1.34BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare
1.35an enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of
1.36the Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to Captain Brent
2.1McMurry, commanding officer for the Navy Operational Support Center in Minneapolis on behalf
2.2of all women and men therein currently serving.
