House Concurrent Resolution 20

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING MISS ASIA MONET WILSON REID UPON BEING CHOSEN AS A DEBUTANTE FOR THE ORIGINAL ILLINOIS CLUB AND FOR HER MANY ACCOMPLISHMENTS.

     WHEREAS, Miss Asia Monet Wilson Reid was selected as a Debutante for the Original Illinois Club, purposed with helping young women of color to develop a sense of worth, become better educated, develop a purpose in their life and focus on their goals and accomplishments in society; and

     WHEREAS, when the debutante committee interviewed Miss Asia for this honor, the members knew immediately that she met every qualification, as a scholar, musician, community servant, athlete, actress, orator, devout Christian and a legacy within the Original Illinois Club; and

     WHEREAS, the alluring daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Aviers Reid of Laplace, Louisiana and Mrs. Rhonda Wilson Tucker of Amite, Louisiana, Miss Asia's connection to the Original Illinois Club spans decades by way of her stepmother, the former Jacquelyn Denise Tartt, first maid in 1984 and her step-grandfather, the late Major Harry C. Tartt (US Army), a member for almost 25 years serving as a club Chaplin, parliamentarian, the 1987 Ball Captain and King Illinois in 1997; and

     WHEREAS, no one is more proud of Miss Asia than her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Reid of Laplace, Louisiana, Mrs. Vertis Wilson of Mt. Herman, Louisiana, and so too would her grandfather, the late Mr. Vernell Wilson, if he could be with her now; and

     WHEREAS, Miss Asia was a natural-born scholar from her youth, memorizing and spelling the names of all fifty states in the Union, and while a student at Natalbany Elementary School and Lucille Nesome Middle School in Tickfaw, she was consistently on the honor roll through her formative years; and 

     WHEREAS, an adolescent dedicated to academics was not deficient in athletics, as a member of the basketball, track and varsity volleyball teams, Asia grew in strength and learned necessary team-building skills; and  

     WHEREAS, her intellect was not contained to her childhood, while matriculating at St. Charles Catholic High School, she maintained honor roll status as a freshman and received a 4.0 GPA and Principal's List accolades during her sophomore year; and

     WHEREAS, Miss Asia is currently an outstanding honor student at Jewel Sumner High School where she maintains a 3.8 GPA, is a member of the Beta Club and received the school's award for Academic Excellence; and

     WHEREAS, Miss Asia has had an eye to the stage since childhood, training young by reciting entire dialogues from her favorite musicals such as The Wiz and Dreamgirls, and closely observing her beloved dramas, including every Tyler Perry play and every episode of "Meet the Browns"; and

     WHEREAS, performance was already on her childlike mind when she was crowned queen of her elementary school, St. Joan of Arc in New Orleans in 2002 and went on to win the St. John Parish Airline Summer Camp Talent Show; and

     WHEREAS, Miss Asia continued her calling to music by winning the District IX Beta Conference Talent Show with her fellow peers, winning the 2015 Outstanding Soprano Award given by her school chorus, performing the national anthem during her high school's opening night football game and receiving a superior score in the Louisiana Music Association's Solo Ensemble competition, but all performances dim when compared to the day she sang "At Last" by Etta James at her grandparents' 50th wedding anniversary celebration at the Beau Ravige Resort in Biloxi, Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, not only are her accomplishments academic and musical, Miss Asia also has a talent for drama as a member of the Show Choir and Stage-Hands Drama Club where she was cast in their production of the Guys and Dolls stage play; and

     WHEREAS, her talent is not limited to her high school, as she was accepted to the acclaimed Anthony Bean Community Theatre and Acting School in New Orleans and was cast in the lead role of Gabriella in High School Musical, Lauren Hill in Old School, New School and Martha in Martha Reeves and the Vandellas; and

     WHEREAS, a gifted orator, Asia has been invited to recite the late Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s famous "I Have A Dream" speech at churches in the River Parishes for the last three years in celebration of Black History Month; and

     WHEREAS, Asia has dedicated her life to Christ and helped lead the youth choir for several years at Good Hope Baptist Church in Wilmer, Louisiana, where she performed her first public solo at the age of seven; and

     WHEREAS, her mission for Christ is not confined to the church doors, Asia has always been heavily involved in community service, singing for a Relay for Life cancer research benefit and volunteering at the River Parishes SPCA, Susan B. Komen Race for the Cure Relay, D.A.R.E. America and the Zurich Golf Classic benefitting the Fore Kids Foundation; and

     WHEREAS, a young woman who is always preparing for the future, Miss Asia successfully completed Xavier University's Stress on Analytical Reasoning (SOAR) program to prepare for science and health careers and learn the cultural and personal development necessary to achieve those goals; and

     WHEREAS, Miss Asia's future is stellar having already been awarded a four-year Merit Based Scholarship to Xavier University; however, she may otherwise attend Tulane or Dillard, majoring in communications with aspirations to run a television network with her own television series to highlight the positive accomplishments of the African-American community and to break down stereotypes by uplifting her community and culture; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to acknowledge the goals and ambitions of such a beautiful spirit as that of Asia, who is following the sentiment expressed by Mahatma Gandhi as she pursues her dreams in television, "If I have the belief that I can do it, I shall surely acquire the capacity to do it":

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Miss Asia Monet Wilson Reid on being inducted into the 2016 Original Illinois Club debutantes and for her many impressive accomplishments.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Miss Reid and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
