House Resolution 113
A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING CLAIRE FERGUSON AND CHARLIE BRAND OF EAST WEBSTER HIGH SCHOOL UPON WINNING THE 2016 MISSISSIPPI HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION CLASS 2A/1A MIXED DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIP.
WHEREAS, Charlie Brand and Claire Ferguson reigned victorious in every tennis match they played together for East Webster High School and ultimately won the 2016 Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 2A/1A Mixed Doubles Championship; and
WHEREAS, when Charlie and Claire were paired together in mixed doubles just before district tournament play, the pairing came after a hunch by East Webster High School Head Tennis Coach Pam Champion, and the hunch paid off; and
WHEREAS, Charlie, a previous boys doubles state champion, stated that he and Claire worked really well together, as she is a real consistent player and excels at making sure the ball gets back across the net, and Claire enjoys playing mixed doubles, as prior to being paired together, Claire had been playing girls doubles; and
WHEREAS, the state championship winning mixed doubles team received a forfeit win in the first round of the state tournament played at Oxford Tennis Center in Oxford, Mississippi, before sweeping their second round opponent in two sets, and in the semifinals, they won the first set, but dropped the second one, and after they jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the third set, they held on for the 7-5 win; and
WHEREAS, Charlie and Claire's consistency in the back court and strong net play helped them win a tight 7-6, 7-6 match in the state finals, and they credit their win to securing the key wins that were necessary to claim the state championship and communicating effectively on the tennis court and working together as a team; and
WHEREAS, Claire and Charlie have been superbly coached and inspired by Head Coach Pam Champion, who has broadened their knowledge of the game and refined their skills in execution; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and commend excellence, such as that displayed by the East Webster High School tennis duo, Claire Ferguson and Charlie Brand, and it is with great pride that we congratulate these student athletes and Head Coach Pam Champion, who have brought honor to their school, their community and to this great Magnolia State:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Claire Ferguson and Charlie Brand of East Webster High School upon winning the 2016 Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 2A/1A Mixed Doubles Championship, and extend best wishes to the team and coach for continued success in all of their future endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to East Webster High School, Head Coach Pam Champion, Claire Ferguson, Charlie Brand and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
