A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE LAUDABLE SERVICE OF AND EXCEPTIONAL LEADERSHIP DR. CLAUDIA A. LIMBERT PROVIDED AS PRESIDENT OF THE MISSISSIPPI UNIVERSITY FOR WOMEN AND EXTENDING CONGRATULATIONS AND BEST WISHES FOR CONTINUED SUCCESS UPON THE OCCASION OF HER RETIREMENT.
WHEREAS, Dr. Claudia A. Limbert, who began her service as the 13th President of the Mississippi University for Women (MUW) on July 1, 2002, after being appointed in April 2002 by the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning, and who has been a stellar leader in the administration and prosperity of the university, has announced her plans of retirement after eight years of exceptional service, effective June 30, 2010; and
WHEREAS, a native of Missouri, Dr. Limbert married and had four children before beginning her undergraduate studies at Bethel College in Kansas, where she received a bachelor's degree in English, history and education in 1978, and later received a master's degree in creative writing in 1980 and a Ph.D. in English literature in 1988, both from Boston University; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Limbert began her career as an English and women's studies professor at Pennsylvania State University, Shenango, in 1988, where she was selected as an administrative fellow, spending the next year in leadership training under the direction of a senior vice president at Penn State, University Park; and
WHEREAS, following her fellowship experience, Dr. Limbert became the Director of Academic Affairs at Penn State, DuBois and has since been one of the country's most ardent champions of educational success, having served as Penn State's acting campus executive officer before being selected for the permanent position in 1998, a position she held until being appointed President of Mississippi University for Women; and
WHEREAS, upon seizing the reins of the Office of President of the Mississippi University for Women, Dr. Limbert's administrative and leadership abilities were put to the test and her first order of business was to lead the university in recovering from a tornado that ravaged the campus just months after she began her tenure; and
WHEREAS, while Dr. Limbert's term as president was not void of challenges, her presidency will be defined by her competence to lead in times of diversity and her ability to prosper the university by way of promoting alumni giving, increasing student enrollment, capitol improvement, and quality academic programs; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Limbert has supervised a portion of a $45,000,000.00 master plan for the MUW campus, which has birthed the opening of the $13,500,000.00 Pohl-Stark Recreation Complex in 2007, complete with indoor pool, racquetball courts, a 5,000-square-foot strength and conditioning room, a student gathering area, and auxiliary gym and meeting rooms, replacing the Emma Ody Pohl Gym destroyed by the November 2002 storm; and the 2009 dedication of the Art and Design Building after $6,000,000.00 in repairs and renovations; and
WHEREAS, noted throughout the nation for her holistic, insightful and faculty-inclusive approach to administration,
Dr. Limbert has received many awards, including the prestigious Athena Award for service to women and the community by the Greater DuBois Area Chamber of Commerce, the Outstanding College Administrator of Penn State's Commonwealth College in 2001, the Rosemary Schraer Mentor Award from Penn State University's
Commission for Women in 2000, the Teaching Award in 1994 from Penn State, Shenango's students, named one of the Achieving Women of Penn State, and was selected as one of Mississippi's 12 Leading Business Women for 2004; and
WHEREAS, a member of numerous organizations and committees, Dr. Limbert has served a three-year term on the Southern Association of Schools Commission on Colleges, MUW's accreditation agency, as a commissioner and member of the executive council, chairperson of the Mississippi commissioners and named the Mississippi representative to AASCU (American Association of State Colleges and Universities); and
WHEREAS, retiring to spend more time with her family and to concentrate on writing, something for which she shares a deep passion, Dr. Limbert's fiction and nonfiction have appeared in such publications as Country Living and House Beautiful, her scholarly works have appeared in Restoration, Philological Quarterly, and The National Women's Studies Association Journal, and her most recent work is an essay in the book, Herspace: Women, Writing, and Solitude; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to commend the works of such zealous individuals who set the benchmark of excellence in educational and postsecondary educational leadership, as has been epitomized in the service and dedication of Dr. Claudia A. Limbert:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend the laudable service and exceptional leadership Dr. Claudia A. Limbert provided as the 13th President of the Mississippi University for Women, congratulate her upon the occasion of her retirement and extend sincere wishes for continued success in all of her future endeavors and enjoyment in the lighter years of her retirement.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Dr. Limbert and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
