House Resolution 43
A RESOLUTION WELCOMING AND RECOGNIZING VISITING DIGNITARIES FROM THE REPUBLIC OF TURKEY.
WHEREAS, the Republic of Turkey, a beautiful country that connects Europe and the Middle East, is often referred to as the "cradle of civilization" because of its rich history as home to a variety of nations of people since 6500 B.C.; and
WHEREAS, Turkey is an important ally of the United States of America, and America's friendship and diplomatic and economic relationships with the Republic of Turkey have become more and more important in the context of current events that are occurring in the Middle East; and
WHEREAS, Turkey is a democratic, secular and constitutional republic that is governed by the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, a unicameral legislature known as Parliament, and it is a country that has demonstrated its commitment to world peace and liberty and its tolerance of others in secular and religious venues; and
WHEREAS, Turkey's Parliament is composed of 550 members, who are elected for five-year terms from 85 electoral districts, and under the Turkish Constitution, it is the sole body that may exercise the country's legislative function; and
WHEREAS, the Mississippi House of Representatives is honored on February 21, 2012, by a visit from nine dignitaries from the Republic of Turkey, namely, Mayor Zihni Aldirmaz of the Adana Metropolitan Municipality, Mayor Mustafa Poyraz of the Kahraman Maras Metropolitan Municipality, Congresswoman Oya Eronat, Congresswoman Fatos Gurkan, Congresswoman Safiye Seymenoglu, Congressman Yahya Akman, Congressman Hilmi Bilgin and Congressman Mehmet Sari; and
WHEREAS, Mayor Zihni Aldirmaz of the Adana Metropolitan Municipality, an architect and building contractor by trade, was the CEO of Yeni Adana Construction Company before his election to public office, and he is known as a tireless advocate for the children of Adana, helping to establish numerous foundations for the advancement of children; and
WHEREAS, Mayor Mustafa Poyraz of the Kahraman Maras Metropolitan Municipality, a municipality which is notable for being the sister city of Jackson, is a pharmacist who owns an independent pharmacy, is a determined public servant who has labored to bring fresh water to the citizens he serves, and has initiated and created a campaign to provide for the reconstruction of his city; and
WHEREAS, Congresswoman Oya Eronat is a civil engineer, previously serving her constituents as the President of the Diyarbakir Yenisehir Province Media Institute before her election to the Turkish Parliament in 2011, where she now devotes herself to civil rights and human rights; and
WHEREAS, Congresswoman Fatos Gurkan is educated in the law and worked as an attorney before her election to the Turkish Parliament in 2007, where she attentively cares for the needs of her constituents; and
WHEREAS, Congresswoman Safiye Seymenoglu was elected to the Turkish Parliament in 2010, working previously as an architect and serving as a member of the Surmene City Council, where she was dedicated to voluntary service in several local civic organizations; and
WHEREAS, Congressman Yahya Akman is a founding member of the Justice and Development Party of the Turkish Parliament, where he has served as a member of the Clerk Council and as the Chairman of the Petition Commission; and
WHEREAS, Congressman Hilmi Bilgin was elected to the Turkish Parliament in 2011 and is an attorney who has served as the President of the Sivas Bar Association and also as the president in charge of elections in the Sivas region; and
WHEREAS, Congressman Mehmet Sari is an industrialist and businessman, and before his election to the Turkish Parliament, he served as a member of the Nizip City Council and as Chairman of the Board of Ozsari Food Industry Trade Limited Company; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to welcome and recognize distinguished legislative counterparts and dignitaries from other democratic countries:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby welcome and recognize these visiting legislators and dignitaries from the Grand National Assembly of Turkey and extend best wishes for their continued success in leading the people of the Republic of Turkey.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to each of the visiting legislators and dignitaries, to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
