A RESOLUTION COMMENDING MR. SEDRIC SCOTT UPON SERVING AS THE MISSISSIPPI STATE DIRECTOR OF SIGMA PHI BETA SIGMA FRATERNITY, INC., AND UPON HIS SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY.
WHEREAS, Mr. Sedric Scott, the Mississippi State Director of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., is being honored for his service to the community as a distinguished member of the fraternity; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Scott, a native of Holly Springs, Mississippi, who knows the importance of receiving an education, earned degrees from Rust College, Central Michigan University and Argosy University and then made contributions in the public education system as a teacher and academic coach for over 20 years before becoming employed with the University of Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, on April 2, 1998, Mr. Scott joined Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., through the Gamma Psi Chapter at Rust College, which is located in his hometown of Holly Springs; and
WHEREAS, after making vast contributions in the Gamma Psi Chapter, Mr. Scott later moved to Atlanta and continued his legacy of service and joined the Lambda Sigma Chapter of the fraternity, where he utilized his leadership skills and served on numerous committees within the fraternity - all for the betterment of society; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Scott also served as collegiate chapter advisor, chapter secretary and membership intake process coordinator while in the Lambda Sigma Chapter, which speaks to his leadership talent, and in 2012, he returned to the Magnolia State and rejoined his collegiate advising chapter, Delta Tau Sigma, in Holly Springs; and
WHEREAS, notably, for the past decade Mr. Scott has served as president of the Delta Tau Sigma Chapter and has taken this chapter to unprecedent heights; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Scott, before being elected as Mississippi State Director of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., served as the first vice state director for two consecutive terms, which speaks to his exceptional ability to serve in a leadership role; and
WHEREAS, due to his service within this elite fraternity, Mr. Scott was elected as a member of the Outstanding Sigmas of the Southern Region along with his late honorable fraternity brother and former member of congress and Civil Rights activist, John Lewis, and three other phenomenal members of the fraternity; and
WHEREAS, in addition to his leadership role in Phi Beta Sigma, Inc., Mr. Scott serves as an assistant director in the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life at the University of Mississippi, where he primary advises the National Pan-Hellenic Council as well as oversees of the office's EMERGE program, which cultivates, educates and empowers Greek-affiliated students and the university, and he oversees career readiness initiatives; and
WHEREAS, throughout his endeavors, Mr. Scott has been lovingly supported by his beautiful wife, Alisheia, and their two delightful daughters; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of the Mississippi House of Representatives to recognize the excellence of a great Mississippian such as Mr. Scott whose promotion of brotherhood, scholarship and service and whose belief in advocacy, community service and engagement benefits this great state as a whole:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend Mr. Sedric Scott upon his service to the community service and upon his leadership and service within Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mr. Sedric Scott and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
