Senate Concurrent Resolution 506
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION MOURNING THE PASSING AND COMMENDING THE LIFE AND EDUCATIONAL SERVICE OF FORMER LONGTIME EAST CENTRAL COMMUNITY COLLEGE PRESIDENT DR. EDDIE M. SMITH OF DECATUR, MISSISSIPPI.
WHEREAS, Dr. Eddie M. Smith, 71, who served as President of East Central Community College from 1985 to 2000, passed away April 14, 2014. Dr. Smith served his alma mater as its sixth President; and
WHEREAS, during Dr. Smith's tenure, the college experienced unprecedented growth in numerous areas, especially in enrollment, program offerings, campus facilities and workforce education. An increased emphasis was placed on recruiting students of all ages. As a result of a closely followed recruitment and retention plan, enrollment increased each of his 15 years at the helm; and
WHEREAS, upon his retirement in 2000, the college's Board of Trustees named the newly constructed Student Union in his honor, in recognition of his dedication to serving students of all ages; and
WHEREAS, survivors include his wife of 38 years, Charlotte Smith; two daughters: Kelli and Wendy; and one sister, Claire Woodard. He was a faithful member of Clarke Venable Baptist Church; and
WHEREAS, we pay tribute and cherish fondly the memory of this most public spirited citizen whose legacy of educational leadership was a wonderful example for his colleagues and for all in Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That
we do hereby mourn the passing and commend the educational leadership of former East Central Community College President Dr. Eddie M. Smith, and extend the sympathy of the Legislature to his surviving family.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to the surviving family of Dr. Smith, forwarded to the Board of Trustees of East Central Community College and the Community College Board and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
