MISSISSIPPI LEGISLATURE
2013 Regular Session
To: Rules
By: Senator(s) Jackson (32nd), Butler (38th), Parker
Senate Concurrent Resolution 541
(As Adopted by Senate)
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE NOXUBEE COUNTY "TIGERS" FOOTBALL TEAM AND COACH TYRONE SHORTER FOR THEIR PERFECT 2012 SEASON AND CLASS 4A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP AND FOR THEIR CLARION-LEDGER SUPER 10 NO. 1 RANKING.
WHEREAS, Darrell Robinson's running and a stingy defense carried the Noxubee County "Tigers" Football Team to a 16-0 perfect 2012 season and the Class 4A MHSA State Championship; and
WHEREAS, the Tigers, ranked No. 1 in The Clarion-Ledger Super 10, took the Championship Trophy back to Macon for the second time and first since 2008, when Coach Tyrone Shorter was an assistant under M.C. Miller. "These guys came out and worked hard all spring and summer and did what they told me they were going to do," said Coach Shorter. "I believed in them because of their attitudes and work ethic"; and
WHEREAS, at the Championship Game on December 1, 2012, Noxubee led 8-6 after three quarters. Robinson, who set the state single-season touchdown record, all but sealed the win with a one-yard TD run with 3:55 left. It was the 50th touchdown of the season for Robinson, who surpassed former Weir standout Dicenzo Miller's TD mark (47) in the semifinals and finished with 176 yards on 37 carries; and
WHEREAS, Dylan Bradley led the defense with 12 tackles, including 2-1/2 sacks and four tackles for loss. Javoris Glenn had 11 tackles; and
WHEREAS, in what was a photo finish, Noxubee finished the season ranked No. 1 in The Clarion-Ledger Super 10 and edged Class 6A champion South Panola for the top spot. "That was something that was important to these players," said Noxubee County Coach Tyrone Shorter. "Our goal was to win state and to be No. 1 in the state. It's the second time in 5 years that the Tigers have finished No. 1 after just beating out Meridian in 2008." Shorter, in his third season as Head Coach, served as Defensive Coordinator under M.C. Miller on that 2008 Noxubee team. "To be a part of that group was sweet, but to be Head Coach of this group was even sweeter"; and
WHEREAS, the 2012 Tigers Football roster is as follows:
Fernando Phillips, WR, TE; Nathaniel Peterson, WR; Devonte Scott, RB; Eric Hunt, LB, RB; Kavorkian Brewer, LB; Wesley Bush, DB; Jarvis Taylor, RB; Charles Hughes, TE; Lavincent Ashford, QB, WR; Jessie Bryant, WR, QB; Robert Neal, WR; Anthony Skinner, DL, LB; Tamarcus Silvers, WR; Alan Clay, WR; Montreze Jones, WR; DeAngelo Ballard, QB; Darrell Brandon, DB; Antravion Jamison, DB; Javoris Glenn, LB; Mahlon Robinson, CB, LB; Dennis Brooks, DB; Devonte Sanders, DB; Darrell Robinson, RB; Javancy Jones, LB; Terrian Dora, LB; Nicholas Gillespie, WR; Jeremy Hunt, LB, S; Antonio Ryland, LB, RB; Brian Joiner, LB; Anthony Brewer, LB; Zack Kaufman, K; Traon Young, OL, DL; Martize Mitchell, OL; Curtis Gulley, OL, DL; Dmyas Gilkey, OL; Melvin Lewis, OL; Tamarcus Williams, OL; Ivan Goodwin, OL; Trinity Conner, DL; Michael Brown, OL; Jercovie Stewart, OL; Jonathan Orr, OL; James Macon, OL; Jared Farmer, OL; John Cheatham, OL; Deshawn Hopkins, DL; Byrce Turner, OL; Nathan Cobb, WR; Miles Ellis, WR; Ronnie Gray, DL; Jose Moran, DL; Victor Carr, DL; Dylan Bradley, DL; Edrion Rice, DL; Kenterius Turner, DL; and Coach Tyrone Shorter; and
WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize these student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Noxubee County "Tigers" Football Team and Coach Tyrone Shorter for their perfect 16-0 season and MHSAA Class 4A State Championship and for their Clarion-Ledger Super 10 No. 1 ranking, and extend to the players, coaches, parents and sponsors our best wishes for future athletic and academic successes.
