MISSISSIPPI LEGISLATURE

2015 Regular Session

To: Rules

By: Senator(s) Massey, Parker

Senate Concurrent Resolution 548

(As Adopted by Senate)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION MOURNING THE LOSS AND COMMENDING THE PUBLIC SERVICE OF DESOTO COUNTY SUPERVISOR HARVEY WAYNE LEE.

WHEREAS, DeSoto County Supervisor Harvey Wayne Lee of Hernando died in an apparent all-terrain vehicle accident October 28, 2014; and

WHEREAS, Lee was elected in 2011 to the Supervisors District 5 Post, representing the City of Hernando and the Communities of Lewisburg and Love; and

WHEREAS, Lee's colleagues on the five-member county governing board expressed sadness.  "Harvey was a leader of the community and such a valuable member of our board.  He turned 54 on the day of the accident.  It was his birthday." said Supervisor Lee Caldwell; and

WHEREAS, there were tears and even laughter as Michael Lee recounted the life of his brother.  Michael Lee recalled television footage of his brother packing a pistol as he mowed his lawn, a show of support for the state's open gun carry law.  Harvey Lee was outspoken on many issues, but he voiced his mind, with his comments quickly followed by an "aw shucks" grin.  "We grew up in our daddy's barbershop," Michael Lee said.  It was often a chance for Harvey Lee to hear from constituents and talk about the weather or politics, whichever topic generated the most conversation.  Michael Lee said his brother always spoke his mind but he was able to smooth over any situation with his likable manner and good disposition.  "Everybody loved Harvey.  He loved that job.  He loved dealing with people and helping people."; and

WHEREAS, he leaves to cherish his memories his wife, June Lynn Owen Lee; his mother, Joane Avent Lee; daughter, Nancy Jo Edwards (Kyle); son, Hunter Wayne Lee; granddaughter, Lacie Ann Edwards; sister, Carla Lee Smith (Mark); and brother, Michael Lee (Mary Lee), all of Hernando.  He was preceded in death by his father, Wayne Lee; and

WHEREAS, it is with sadness that we pay tribute and cherish fondly the memory of this most public spirited citizen of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby mourn the loss and commend the public service of DeSoto County Supervisor Harvey Wayne Lee, and extend the condolences of the Legislature to his surviving family on his passing.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to the surviving family of Harvey Lee, forwarded to the DeSoto County Board of Supervisors, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
