Senate Concurrent Resolution 621

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION TO RECOGNIZE AND SALUTE THE JACKSON PREPARATORY SCHOOL "PATRIOTS" BOYS SOCCER TEAM FOR ITS 5TH CONSECUTIVE MAIS CLASS AAA TITLE AND COACH JON MARCUS DUNCAN FOR HIS MILESTONE 500TH VICTORY.

WHEREAS, the battle of the "Patriots" started out like another Jackson Prep rout, then turned into a nail biter, but the Jackson Prep Soccer Team held on for a 3-2 victory over Madison-Ridgeland Academy (MRA) on February 21, 2015, for a fifth consecutive MAIS Division I Boys Soccer Championship; and

WHEREAS, Prep (25-4-1) was perfect against MAIS competition and won its last 18 games of the season.  The streak included a 2-0 regular season victory at MRA that gave Coach Duncan his 500th win for boys and girls; and

WHEREAS, Prep built a 3-0 lead on the play of Jacob McNeely and Tate Fowler.  McNeely scored the first goal on a run through the defense in the 14th minute.  Five minutes later, Fowler left-footed the ball just inside the far post.  The third goal came in the 27th minute, when MRA goalie Chase Warren stopped a shot by McNeely, but Fowler put in the rebound.  MRA cut the lead to 3-1 before halftime and pressed the attack through most of the second half and came close to a tying goal on a couple of occasions; and

WHEREAS, "We may have taken the pressure off a little bit, and that can happen in a State Championship game," sand Coach Jon Marcus Duncan, who has coached Prep to nine Championships.  "That is why you score three goals early"; and

WHEREAS, Coach Jon Marcus Duncan has served as the Patriots' boys and girls Soccer Coach since 2000.  Entering his 500th Victory in the game against MRA, his boys coaching record stood at 270-46-19 and his record as the girls' Coach is 229-52-26 with 10 Title wins.  Coach Duncan played soccer at Prep for six years before graduating in 1995.  "I had the privledge of my dad (Jimmy Duncan) being the Coach my Seventh- and Eighth-Grade years.  We won a State Championship my Eighth-Grade year," he said.  The main thing he learned from his father was the need for discipline.  As for his coaching philosophy, Coach Duncan said, "I just want them to not take for granted this sport that I love so dearly"; and

WHEREAS, the 2015 Patriots Boys Soccer Team Roster is:  Leland Meadows, John Nix Arledge, TK Griffis, JC Pride, Taylor Wallace, Tate Fowler, Russell Roberts, Tanner McCraney, Zach Gay, Griffin Draughn, Whit Lovelace, Kaleb Lovertich, Harrison Porter, Ross Carter, Jacob Crawley, Hunter Patterson, Kyle Culbertson, Jake Maloney, Peyton Harrison, Joseph Upton, Jacob McNeely, Brent Hall, Brendon McLeod and Kirk McGehee; Head Coach Jon Marcus Duncan; and Assistant Coaches Jay Liles and Brad Simpson; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we commend this team of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby recognize and salute the Jackson Preparatory School "Patriots" Boys Soccer Team for its 5th consecutive MAIS Class AAA Title and Coach Jon Marcus Duncan for his milestone 500th Victory, and extend the best wishes of the Legislature to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors for future success.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Duncan, Jackson Prep Headmaster Jason L. Walton, forwarded to the Jackson Prep Board of Trustees, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
