Senate Concurrent Resolution 638
(As Adopted by Senate)
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE BAY SPRINGS "BULLDOGS" BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH COREY MACKEY FOR WINNING ITS SECOND MISSISSIPPI HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION CLASS 2A STATE TITLE IN FIVE YEARS.
WHEREAS, with Bay Springs High School Boys Basketball Team all tied up at 35 entering the fourth quarter of the Class 2A Title Game versus Ingomar High School on March 8, 2019, Bulldog Coach Corey Mackey recalled a previous conversation he had with Senior Standout Kevin Grimes. Grimes, a member of the school's Bruce Stevens-led State Championship Team in 2015, yearned to lead the Bulldogs to one of his own. "When it was 35 to 35, I told Grimes 'Make it happen'," Coach Mackey said. Not even a fourth-quarter ankle injury for Grimes could keep he and his teammates from making it happen. After the teams exchanged basket after basket in the quarter to make it 44-44, the Bulldogs delivered the knockout blow with an 8-0 scoring run on the way to a 56-51 win and the school's second State Championship in the last five seasons; and
WHEREAS, in the fourth quarter, Freshman Chad Jones stepped up and scored nine of his game-high 21 points, which were just ahead of Grimes' 20. The Bulldogs didn't miss a beat with Jones having the game of his life. Fueled by revenge, Coach Mackey's Bulldogs (31-3) were not going to be denied. The tour concluded at "The Big House" with Bay Springs going 3-for-3 with three straight wins over teams that beat them in the last two seasons. It was far from easy, especially against Ingomar. The Falcons used an early 8-0 scoring run to jump out to an 8-4 lead, and they led by as many as seven points later in the half. "We went out there in the second half and basically locked them up," Mackey said. "It feels great to win this one with the adverse situations. It's a great win for us and the community"; and
WHEREAS, the 2018-2019 Bay Springs Bulldogs Championship Team Roster is: Cartize Booth, F; Anthony Wheaton, PG; Zach Whitlock, G; Malik Holliday, PG; Derrien Lee, F; Jacorrieous Moore, G; Chad Jones, PG; Treymaine Wheaton, G; Kevin Grimes, G; A'donnius McGill, G; Daylan Lindsey, F; Robert Millsap, F; Damien Wheaton, F; and Marvin Agee, G; Head Coach Corey Mackey and Assistant Coach Terrence Smith.
WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this group of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Bay Springs "Bulldogs" Boys Basketball Team and Head Coach Corey Mackey for winning its second Mississippi High School Athletic Association Class 2A State Title in five years, and extend to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors our best wishes for continued success.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Corey Mackey and Bay Springs High School Principal Dr. Kesia Pope, forwarded to the Jasper County Board of Education, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
