A BILL TO BE ENTITLED

AN ACT adopting the linville caverns spider as the state's official spider.

Whereas, scaffold web spiders can be found throughout the United States most often in caves and rock crevices near rivers and streams; and

Whereas, one species of scaffold web spiders known as the Linville Caverns spider (Nesticus carolinensis) can be found in the Linville Caverns in western North Carolina; and

Whereas, the Linville Caverns spider is unique to North Carolina because it has not been found in any other place in the world; and

Whereas, it is only fitting that the Linville Caverns spider be designated as the State's official spider; Now, therefore,

The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts:

SECTION 1.  Chapter 145 of the General Statutes is amended by adding a new section to read:

"§ 145‑49.  State spider.

The Linville Caverns spider (Nesticus carolinensis) is adopted as the official State spider of North Carolina."

SECTION 2.  This act is effective when it becomes law.
