An Act concerning physical examinations for student-athletes during the 2020-2021 school year.
Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:
1. Notwithstanding the provisions of subsection b. of section 2 of P.L.2013, c.71 (C.18A:40-41.7) or any other section of law to the contrary, a student enrolled in grades six to 12 may participate on a school-sponsored interscholastic or intramural athletic team or squad during the 2020-2021 school year if the student:
a. receives a physical examination, as required under subsection a. of section 2 of P.L.2013, c.71 (C.18A:40-41.7), within 18 months of the first day of official practice in the athletic season; and
b. complies with all other requirements of law or regulation concerning participation in school-sponsored interscholastic or intramural athletic activities.
2. This act shall take effect immediately.
STATEMENT
Under current law, before a student enrolled in grades six through 12 may participate in a school-sponsored interscholastic or intramural athletic activity, the student is required to receive a physical examination within 365 days before the first day of official practice of the athletic season. This physical examination is required to be conducted by a licensed physician, advanced practice nurse, or physician assistant.
Under the bill, a student enrolled in grades six through 12 may participate in a school-sponsored interscholastic or intramural athletic activity during the 2020-2021 school year if the student receives a physical examination within 18 months before the first day of official practice of that athletic season. As a result, the bill extends the period of validity for a student-athlete's physical examination from one year to one and one-half years during the 2020-2021 school year.
