STATEMENT
This bill requires that, when a child is born in New Jersey to a parent who is an active duty service member, the State registrar is to provide the child's custodial parent with one free copy of the child's birth certificate.
Birth certificates are completed by the child's parents and the health care professional attending the birth and filed with the local registrar, who in turn transmits the certificate, along with all other vital records received in the past month, to the State registrar.
Under the bill, upon receiving a birth certificate for a child born in New Jersey to a parent who is an active duty service member, the State Registrar will be required to send a free certified copy of the birth certificate to the child's custodial parent. The bill will apply to children born to parents who are active duty members of both the Armed Forces of the United States and the National Guard, and it will not matter for the purposes of the bill which of the child's parents is the active duty service member.
