CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT

Introduced Pending Technical Review by Legislative Counsel

An Assembly Resolution urging the President and Congress to immediately enact legislation establishing a veterans regional medical center in Cumberland County, New Jersey.

Whereas,  There is currently no federal Department of Veterans Affairs inpatient veterans medical center in southern New Jersey, making it necessary for veterans needing inpatient care to travel long distances to northern New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York and Delaware; and

Whereas,  The East Orange Veterans Medical Center, which  is the largest health care facility serving veterans from southern New Jersey, has not been modernized in decades; and

Whereas,  The federal Department of Veterans Affairs plans to close medical facilities in New York City that currently serve other veterans from southern New Jersey; and

Whereas,  Cumberland County is centrally located with regard to the seven counties comprising southern New Jersey:  Atlantic, Burlington, Cape May, Camden, Cumberland, Gloucester and Salem, making it an ideal location for an inpatient facility for veterans from southern New Jersey; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

     1.  This House urges the Congress of the United States to immediately pass, and the President to approve a law establishing a veterans regional medical center in Cumberland County, New Jersey.

     2.  Duly authenticated copies of this resolution, signed by the Speaker of the General Assembly and attested by the Clerk thereof, shall be transmitted to the President and Vice-President of the United States, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the majority and minority leaders of the United States Senate and House of Representatives, the chair of the Senate Committee on Veterans' Affairs, the chair of the House of Representatives Committee on Veterans' Affairs, each member of the United States Congress elected from this State, and the Secretary of the federal Department of Veterans Affairs.

STATEMENT

This General Assembly resolution urges the President and the Congress of the United States to immediately enact legislation establishing a veterans regional medical center in Cumberland County, New Jersey.

Veterans from southern New Jersey should not have to travel long distances, either to northern New Jersey or out of State, to receive inpatient medical care.

Due to the pressing need for a veterans regional medical center in southern New Jersey and the central location of Cumberland County, the President and Congress are urged to immediately enact legislation establishing such a facility in Cumberland County.
