SYNOPSIS

Urges Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders to name County Route 18 bridge in Monmouth County in honor of Jeffrey Mahon and Jeffrey Hoens.

CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT

Introduced Pending Technical Review by Legislative Counsel.

A Senate Resolution urging the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders to name the bridge on County Route 18 in Monmouth County in honor of Jeffrey Mahon and Jeffrey Hoens.

Whereas, The Legislature has historically named State roadways in honor of citizens in New Jersey whose lives have touched the State or the community in which the roadways sit; and

Whereas, Recognizing the right of county boards of chosen freeholders to name county roadways, this House recognizes the jurisdiction that the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders has over the bridge between the Borough of Belmar and the Borough of Avon-by-the-Sea on County Route 18 in Monmouth County, commonly known as Ocean Avenue; and

Whereas, The bridge on County Route 18 in Monmouth County, commonly known as Ocean Avenue, holds particular significance for the families of Jeffrey Mahon and Jeffrey Hoens; and

Whereas, Born on July 16, 1960, Jeffrey Mahon was raised in Avon-by-the-Sea, attended Avon Elementary School, and graduated from Red Bank Catholic High School in 1978 before attending Benedictine College on a football scholarship in Atchison, Kansas, where he tragically passed away in a motor vehicle accident at the age of 20 years old; and

Whereas, Jeffrey Hoens, who was raised in Westfield, New Jersey, was a volunteer assistant coach for the New Jersey Dare Devils, a hockey team for young people with developmental and intellectual disabilities, and attended Saint Peter's Preparatory School where he was entering his senior year of high school when he tragically passed away while free diving near the bridge on County Route 18 in Monmouth County on July 16, 2016; and

Whereas, The extensive underwater search and rescue mission for Jeffrey Hoens, which coincided with Jeffrey Mahon's birthday, was very personal for members of the Avon-by-the-Sea police department, including Chief of Police Terence Mahon, who is the brother of Jeffrey Mahon; and

Whereas, Recognizing that these tragedies have affected the Monmouth County community and the families that have been connected by these tragedies, it is fitting and proper that the bridge on County Route 18 in Monmouth County, commonly known as Ocean Avenue, between the Borough of Belmar and the Borough of Avon-by-the-Sea be named in honor of Jeffrey Mahon and Jeffrey Hoens; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of New Jersey:

     1.    This House respectfully urges the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders to name the bridge on County Route 18 in Monmouth County, commonly known as Ocean Avenue, between the Borough of Belmar and the Borough of Avon-by-the-Sea in honor of Jeffrey Mahon and Jeffrey Hoens.

     2.    Copies of this resolution, as filed with the Secretary of State, shall be transmitted by the Secretary of the Senate to each member of the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders.

STATEMENT

This resolution urges the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders to name the bridge on County Route 18 in Monmouth County, commonly known as Ocean Avenue, between the Borough of Belmar and the Borough of Avon-by-the-Sea in honor of Jeffrey Mahon, who tragically passed away in a motor vehicle accident and was the brother of the Avon-by-the-Sea Chief of Police, and Jeffrey Hoens, who tragically passed away on Jeffrey Mahon's birthday while free diving near the bridge.
