STATE OF NEW YORK ________________________________________________________________________ 6873 2023-2024 Regular Sessions IN ASSEMBLY May 8, 2023 ___________ Introduced by M. of A. O'DONNELL -- read once and referred to the Committee on Education AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to enacting the "freedom to read act" The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem- bly, do enact as follows: 1 Section 1. This act shall be known and may be cited as the "freedom to 2 read act". 3 § 2. Subdivision 5 of section 13 of the education law is designated 4 the closing paragraph, and a new subdivision 5 is added to read as 5 follows: 6 5. Policies to ensure that school libraries and librarians are able to 7 provide students with access to the widest array of age-appropriate 8 materials available to such school district. 9 § 3. This act shall take effect immediately. EXPLANATION--Matter in italics (underscored) is new; matter in brackets [] is old law to be omitted. LBD07840-04-3
