        AN ACT to amend the judiciary law, in relation to the number of  supreme
          court justices in each judicial district

          The  People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-
        bly, do enact as follows:

     1    Section 1. Section 140-a of the judiciary law, as amended  by  chapter
     2  603 of the laws of 1973, subdivision 1 as amended by chapter 1006 of the
     3  laws  of  1981,  subdivision  2 as amended by chapter 690 of the laws of
     4  2007, subdivision 3 as amended by chapter  711  of  the  laws  of  1978,
     5  subdivisions  5,  6,  7,  and 8 as amended by chapter 500 of the laws of
     6  1982, subdivisions 9 and 10 as amended by section 1 of part XX of  chap-
     7  ter  59  of  the  laws of 2018, subdivisions 11, 12 and 13 as amended by
     8  section 1 of part T of chapter 39 of the laws of 2019, and  the  closing
     9  paragraph  as  added  by  chapter 511 of the laws of 1993, is amended to
    10  read as follows:
    11    § 140-a. Number of supreme court justices in each  judicial  district.
    12  The  number  of  justices of the supreme court in each judicial district
    13  shall be as follows:
    14    1. First district, thirty-eight;
    15    2. Second district, [forty-nine] fifty;
    16    3. Third district, [fifteen] sixteen;
    17    4. Fourth district, thirteen;
    18    5. Fifth district, [seventeen] eighteen;
    19    6. Sixth district, [ten] eleven;
    20    7. Seventh district, [eighteen] nineteen;
    21    8. Eighth district, [twenty-six] twenty-seven;
    22    9. Ninth district, [twenty-nine] thirty-one;
    23    10. Tenth district, [forty-eight] fifty;
    24    11. Eleventh district, [forty-one] forty-two;
    25    12. Twelfth district, [twenty-seven] twenty-eight;

         EXPLANATION--Matter in italics (underscored) is new; matter in brackets
                              [ ] is old law to be omitted.

     1    13. Thirteenth district, [five] seven.
     2    No  person  may  serve  in  the office of justice of the supreme court
     3  unless he or she has been admitted to practice law in the state  of  New
     4  York  for  at  least  ten  years  as of the date he or she commences the
     5  duties of office.
     6    § 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
