       Introduced  by  Sens. PARKER, PERKINS -- read twice and ordered printed,
         and when printed to be committed to  the  Committee  on  Education  --
         recommitted  to  the  Committee on Education in accordance with Senate
         Rule  6,  sec.  8  --  committee  discharged,  bill  amended,  ordered
         reprinted as amended and recommitted to said committee
       AN  ACT  to amend the education law, in relation to establishing a geom-
         etry and algebra II/trigonometry regents  prep  course  for  New  York
         school  districts  that  have  less  than  sixty-five percent of their
         students passing the geometry and algebra II/trigonometry regents
         THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND  ASSEM-
       BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:
    1    Section  1. Legislative findings. The legislature hereby finds that it
    2  is necessary to increase the percentage of students passing the geometry
    3  and algebra II/trigonometry regents in New York  school  districts.  The
    4  geometry and algebra II/trigonometry regents examination for high school
    5  students  is  one  of  five major regents examinations required for high
    6  school students to obtain a general high school diploma. The legislature
    7  further finds that over twenty counties have averaged less  than  sixty-
    8  five  percent  of  their  students  passing  the  geometry  and  algebra
    9  II/trigonometry regents examination. The  legislature  therefore  enacts
   10  this  legislation  establishing  a  geometry and algebra II/trigonometry
   11  regents prep course to prepare students for the mathematics  regents  by
   12  reviewing previous regents exams and materials.
   13    S  2. The education law is amended by adding a new section 815 to read
   14  as follows:
   15    S 815.  GEOMETRY AND ALGEBRA II/TRIGONOMETRY REGENTS PREP  COURSE.  1.
   16  THE  COMMISSIONER,  IN COOPERATION WITH THE BOARD OF REGENTS, IS AUTHOR-
   17  IZED AND DIRECTED TO ESTABLISH AND DEVELOP A PROGRAM FOR THE PREPARATION
   18  OF THE GEOMETRY AND ALGEBRA II/TRIGONOMETRY  REGENTS  EXAMINATION.  SUCH
   19  PROGRAM  MAY BE INSTITUTED BY ANY SCHOOL DISTRICT SEEKING TO PROVIDE ITS
        EXPLANATION--Matter in ITALICS (underscored) is new; matter in brackets

    1  SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH AN OPPORTUNITY TO ACHIEVE A PASSING GRADE
    2  ON THE GEOMETRY AND ALGEBRA II/TRIGONOMETRY REGENTS EXAMINATION.
    3    2.  THE BOARD OF REGENTS SHALL ESTABLISH CRITERIA TO BE USED BY SCHOOL
    4  DISTRICTS PARTICIPATING IN SUCH PROGRAM, INCLUDING THE REVIEW AND  TEST-
    5  ING OF STUDENTS ON PREVIOUS GEOMETRY AND ALGEBRA II/TRIGONOMETRY REGENTS
    6  EXAMINATION MATERIALS.
    7    S  3. This act shall take effect September 1, 2013; provided, however,
    8  that any rules or regulations necessary to implement the  provisions  of
    9  this act shall be promulgated on or before such date.
