Representative Buchy
Honoring the Fort Recovery Monumenton its Centennial. |
WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the 130th General Assembly of Ohio are pleased to recognize the Fort Recovery Monument on the memorable occasion of its rededication for its One Hundredth Anniversary, observed May 5, 2013; and |
WHEREAS, On November 4, 1791, troops under the command of Major General Arthur St. Clair were soundly defeated on the banks of the Wabash River by nearly 1,500 warriors led by Little Turtle and Blue Jacket, suffering the loss of some 900 soldiers and more than 150 camp followers. Tasked by President George Washington to raise a proper army and atone for that embarrassment, Major General Anthony Wayne led his soldiers to construct Fort Recovery on the site of St. Clair's rout, and on June 30 and July 1, 1794, his armies successfully repelled and defeated 2,500 native Americans again under the command of Little Turtle and Blue Jacket, resulting in the breakup of the Indian confederation, the opening of the Northwest Territory for American settlement, and eventual statehood for Ohio; and |
WHEREAS, In 1912, a monument was built at Fort Recovery over the mass tomb of the unknown soldiers killed there during St. Clair's defeat and Wayne's victory, and it was dedicated on July 1, 1913. The memorial consists of a 101-foot obelisk, a statue of a frontiersman facing west, and numerous medallions and plaques, and its rededication is an appropriate time to honor those brave individuals who answered this country's call to arms and who made sacrifices in service to the United States of America; and |
WHEREAS, The spirit of our nation is founded upon, and reflected in, its exciting and colorful past, and the memorializing of significant events and landmarks is vital to the preservation of America's heritage. All those involved with the rededication of the Fort Recovery Monument are to be applauded for their tremendous efforts to ensure that the important details of our past are transmitted to succeeding generations for their reflection and appreciation; therefore be it |
RESOLVED, That we, the members of the House of Representatives of the 130th General Assembly of Ohio, in adopting this Resolution, commend the Fort Recovery Monument on its Centennial and rededication and extend best wishes for the future; and be it further |
RESOLVED, That the Clerk of the House of Representatives transmit a duly authenticated copy of this Resolution to the Fort Recovery Historical Society. |
