To enact section 5.2266 of the Revised Code to | 1 |
designate May as "ALS Awareness Month." | 2 |
BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF OHIO:
Section 1. That section 5.2266 of the Revised Code be enacted | 3 |
to read as follows: | 4 |
Sec. 5.2266. The month of May is designated as "ALS | 5 |
Awareness Month" to increase public awareness and understanding of | 6 |
amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a disease that is commonly | 7 |
known as Lou Gehrig's disease, and to encourage efforts in finding | 8 |
treatments and a cure for ALS. | 9 |
Section 2. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a | 10 |
neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain | 11 |
and spinal cord causing progressive muscle weakness and paralysis, | 12 |
and eventually death, while the patient's mental capacity and | 13 |
awareness of the disease remain unaffected. Because there is no | 14 |
known cause, prevention, or cure for this devastating disease, the | 15 |
General Assembly finds that it is vitally important that the month | 16 |
of May be designated as "ALS Awareness Month." | 17 |
