A RESOLUTION
Designating Primary Immunodeficiency Awareness Month 1
in Ohio, April 2011.2

WHEREAS,  The members of the 129th General Assembly of Ohio 3
are pleased to declare April 2011 as Primary Immunodeficiency 4
Awareness Month in the State of Ohio; and5

WHEREAS,  Primary immunodeficiency diseases are disorders in 6
which part of the body's immune system is missing or does not 7
function properly. These disorders are caused by intrinsic or 8
genetic defects in the immune system, many of which require 9
chronic replacement therapies such as immune globulin 10
administration, gamma interferon, antibiotics, bone marrow or stem 11
cell transplantation, or gene therapy to protect afflicted 12
individuals from frequent life-threatening infections and 13
debilitating illnesses. The World Health Organization currently 14
recognizes more than two hundred primary immunodeficiency 15
diseases, and they are included by the National Institutes of 16
Health on their list of rare diseases; and17

WHEREAS,  As the public and the medical community know little 18
about primary immunodeficiency diseases, there is a delay of 12.4 19
years between the onset of symptoms and diagnosis, often resulting 20
in permanent functional impairment. These diseases may affect as 21
many as 250,000 people in the United States; and22

WHEREAS,  The education of healthcare professionals about 23
primary immunodeficiency diseases is necessary to reduce delays in 24
diagnosis and treatment, and widespread public support is needed 25
to understand these disorders, find cures, and provide access to 26
available life-saving therapies. The Immune Deficiency Foundation 27
is helping this cause by providing advocacy, education, and 28
research to improve diagnosis and treatment; therefore be it29

RESOLVED,  That we, the members of the 129th General Assembly 30
of Ohio, in adopting this Resolution, designate April 2011 as 31
Primary Immunodeficiency Awareness Month in the State of Ohio and 32
encourage all citizens to learn about primary immunodeficiency 33
diseases and support those affected by them; and be it further34

RESOLVED,  That the Clerk of the Senate transmit duly 35
authenticated copies of this Resolution to the Immune Deficiency 36
Foundation and the news media of Ohio.37
