AN ACT

Designating State Bridge No. 53-0054-0290-0143 located on S.R.

2

54 in Mahanoy Township, Schuylkill County, over the Reading

3

and Northern Railroad, as the Cornelius McElhenny Memorial

4

Bridge.

The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania

6

hereby enacts as follows:

7

Section 1.  Cornelius McElhenny Memorial Bridge.

8

(a)  Findings and declarations.--The General Assembly finds

9

and declares as follows:

(1)  For many years, the bridge carrying S.R. 54 over the

11

Reading and Northern Railroad in Mahanoy Township, Schuylkill

12

County, Department of Transportation No. 53-0054-0290-0143,

13

has been known as the Cornelius McElhenny Bridge.

14

(2)  It was named for Cornelius McElhenny, a resident of

15

Mahanoy Township and a lifelong public servant.

16

(3)  Cornelius McElhenny was born June 13, 1900, and died

17

February 11, 1971.

(4)  He worked in the Morea colliery and served as

2

president of the local chapter of the United Mine Workers of

3

America from 1930 until 1943.

(5)  Throughout his life, he also held positions as

5

supervisor for Mahanoy Township, president of the Mahanoy

6

Township Water Authority, member of the Schuylkill County

7

Executive Board, member of the Mahanoy Township School Board,

8

member of the Mahanoy Area School Board and director of the

9

Morea-New Boston Breaker Corporation. He was also active in

10

St. Canicus Roman Catholic Church of Mahanoy City.

11

(6)  Cornelius McElhenny dedicated his life to his

12

community, and it is fitting that the bridge be officially

13

and permanently designated in his honor.

14

(b)  Designation.--The bridge, known as State Bridge No.

15

53-0054-0290-0143, located on S.R. 54 in Mahanoy Township,

16

Schuylkill County, over the Reading and Northern Railroad, is

17

hereby designated as the Cornelius McElhenny Memorial Bridge.

18

(c)  Signs.–-The Department of Transportation shall erect and

19

maintain appropriate signs displaying the name of the bridge to

20

traffic in both directions on the bridge.

Section 2.  Effective date.

22

This act shall take effect in 60 days.
