A RESOLUTION

Recognizing the outstanding delivery of medical services

2

provided by nurse practitioners and observing the week of

3

November 7 through 13, 2010, as "Nurse Practitioner Week" in

4

Pennsylvania.

WHEREAS, There are more than 140,000 licensed nurse

6

practitioners (NPs) in the United States providing high-quality,

7

cost-effective, comprehensive, patient-centered personalized

8

health care; and

9

WHEREAS, NPs have been providing health care in the United

10

States since 1965; and

11

WHEREAS, NPs are graduates of master's, post-master's or

12

doctoral NP programs with advanced clinical preparation to

13

provide primary, acute and chronic care to patients of all ages

14

and walks of life; and

15

WHEREAS, More than 8,000 NPs graduated from NP programs

16

during 2009; and

WHEREAS, NPs provide health care to people of all ages and in

2

diverse health care settings such as private office practices,

3

hospitals, long-term care facilities, schools, retail clinics,

4

State and local health departments and managed care facilities;

5

and

6

WHEREAS, More than 20% of NPs practice in rural settings with

7

populations of less than 25,000, and of the 62% who work in

8

cities with populations of more than 50,000, more than 39% work

9

in inner-city areas; and

10

WHEREAS, NPs diagnose acute and chronic conditions, prescribe

11

medications and other treatments, treat illnesses and counsel

12

patients on health care issues; and

13

WHEREAS, The high level of satisfaction and confidence that

14

patients have in NPs is evidenced by the approximate 600 million

15

visits that are made to NPs each year; therefore be it

16

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the

17

outstanding delivery of medical services that is provided by

18

nurse practitioners; and be it further

19

RESOLVED, That November 7 through 13, 2010, be observed as

20

"Nurse Practitioner Week" in Pennsylvania.
