| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Designating March 26, 2009, as "Helen Phillips CASUAL Day for |
2 | Colon Cancer Awareness" in northeastern Pennsylvania. |
3 | WHEREAS, Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of |
4 | cancer deaths in this Commonwealth, killing nearly 3,000 |
5 | citizens each year; and |
6 | WHEREAS, Colorectal cancer is the most commonly diagnosed |
7 | cancer in the northeastern Pennsylvania counties of Lackawanna, |
8 | Luzerne, Wyoming, Susquehanna, Pike and Wayne, with 700 cases |
9 | diagnosed and 300 deaths each year; and |
10 | WHEREAS, The Northeast Regional Cancer Institute has |
11 | developed and implemented a targeted colorectal cancer awareness |
12 | program promoting lifesaving cancer screening and lifestyle |
13 | changes, including outreach and education; and |
14 | WHEREAS, Helen Phillips, a leading community volunteer from |
15 | northeastern Pennsylvania, died of colorectal cancer; and |
16 | WHEREAS, Family members and community leaders throughout |
17 | northeastern Pennsylvania have come together to honor Helen |
18 | Phillips and promote colorectal cancer awareness through a |

1 | program known as CASUAL - Colorectal Cancer Awareness Saves |
2 | Unlimited Adult Lives; and |
3 | WHEREAS, March has been set aside as "National Colorectal |
4 | Cancer Awareness Month," and the last Thursday of the month-long |
5 | observance is recognized as "Helen Phillips CASUAL Day for Colon |
6 | Cancer Awareness"; therefore be it |
7 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate March |
8 | 26, 2009, as "Helen Phillips CASUAL Day for Colon Cancer |
9 | Awareness" in northeastern Pennsylvania. |
