A RESOLUTION

Designating May 6, 2009, as "Classrooms for the Future Day" in

2

Pennsylvania.

WHEREAS, High schools in this Commonwealth are currently

4

preparing the next generation of innovators and entrepreneurs

5

who will compete for high-skill jobs in the global knowledge

6

economy; and

7

WHEREAS, Today's high school students are members of the

8

"Technology Generation," who do best when given the opportunity

9

to engage in hands-on learning and exploration; and

10

WHEREAS, Successful students must be able to conduct

11

independent research, work in teams and engage in problem-

12

solving activities; and

13

WHEREAS, Classrooms for the Future is a high school program

14

that prepares students to succeed in a technology-rich and

information-rich world, giving students of this Commonwealth a

2

competitive advantage over students in other states; and

3

WHEREAS, Classrooms for the Future transforms the way high

4

school students learn by providing state-of-the-art laptops and

5

smart classrooms and by training teachers to use technology to

6

improve their teaching; and

7

WHEREAS, By the end of this school year, Classrooms for the

8

Future will have placed 140,000 laptops and other educational

9

technology equipment in Pennsylvania's high schools; and

10

WHEREAS, Classrooms for the Future will provide intensive

11

training and professional development to 20,000 teachers in 453

12

high schools; and

13

WHEREAS, An independent study found that Classrooms for the

14

Future leads to greater student engagement, an intensified focus

15

on problem solving and critical thinking and more frequent use

16

of effective teaching strategies; therefore be it

17

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate May 6,

18

2009, as "Classrooms for the Future Day" in Pennsylvania in

19

recognition of the importance that every high school student in

20

this Commonwealth be fully prepared to thrive in the 21st

21

century in college and careers.
