| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Commending distinguished Mastery Charter School orators. |
2 | WHEREAS, On February 25, 2011, Mastery Charter School's |
3 | Shoemaker Campus in Philadelphia conducted its 1st annual Black |
4 | History Month Oratorical Contest; and |
5 | WHEREAS, In the weeks leading up to the event, students |
6 | delivered competitive speeches on themes relating to success, |
7 | black-on-black crime and community; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Contest finalists were: Briana Lewis, 7th grade; |
9 | Rashima Pierce, 8th grade; Brenea Mitchell, 9th grade; Morghan |
10 | Wearing-Gooden, 10th grade; Elizabeth Olanrewaju, 11th grade; |
11 | and Michael Savior, 12th grade; and |
12 | WHEREAS, First place winners were: Vanessa Morris, 7th grade; |
13 | Kayla Williams, 8th grade; Lakita Williams, 9th grade; Devon |
14 | Walker, 10th grade; Haru'n Jones, 11th grade; and Jolyessa |
15 | Lewis, 12th grade; and |
16 | WHEREAS, The contest was judged by Senator Vincent Hughes, |

1 | Philadelphia Deputy Mayor of Public Safety Everett Gillison, |
2 | Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell, Councilman Curtis Jones, Jr., |
3 | Philadelphia Municipal Court Judge Charles Hayden, then-Eagles |
4 | executive Pamela Browner-White and Dr. Ala Stanford-Frey of |
5 | Abington Memorial Hospital; and |
6 | WHEREAS, Mastery Charter Schools, the nonprofit charter |
7 | operator, has partnered with the School District of Philadelphia |
8 | since 2001 to transform certain underperforming schools while |
9 | promoting the highest standards of student achievement and |
10 | readiness for higher education; and |
11 | WHEREAS, The House of Representatives is pleased to recognize |
12 | those students who were leading orators in Mastery's 1st annual |
13 | Black History Month Oratorical Contest; therefore be it |
14 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commend |
15 | distinguished Mastery Charter School orators. |
