A RESOLUTION

Recognizing and commemorating the 2011 National Convention of

2

the German American National Congress to be held in

3

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, October 27 through 30, 2011.

4

WHEREAS, The mission of Deutsch Amerikanischer National

5

Kongress, also known as DANK, is to preserve and promote the

6

Germanic culture, heritage and language by way of underscoring

7

the rich history, longstanding traditions and countless

8

contributions of Germans and German Americans; and

9

WHEREAS, Following the aftermath of World War II, a chasm

10

emerged between Americans and German Americans which gave rise

11

to strained ethnic relations between the two groups in the

12

United States; and

13

WHEREAS, During this period, an organization that represented

14

the interests of German Americans on a national scale became a

15

necessity; and 

16

WHEREAS, On December 12, 1958, the groundwork for the

organization was laid in a historic meeting convened by Mr.

2

Leonard Enders, editor of the German-language newspaper

3

Abenspost und Sonntagspost; and

4

WHEREAS, On January 30, 1959, DANK was founded and elected

5

its first board in Chicago, Illinois; and

6

WHEREAS, One of the main focuses of DANK was to promote

7

cooperation and unity amongst individuals of German descent both

8

domestically and abroad; and 

9

WHEREAS, DANK would continue to grow in size, influence and

10

scope, thus providing German Americans with a robust national

11

voice; and

12

WHEREAS, On October 6, 1987, DANK's influence would manifest

13

when President Ronald Reagan proclaimed it "German-American

14

Day"; and

15

WHEREAS, DANK boasts over 30 chapters and possesses an

16

impressive network of associate member societies spanning across

17

the United States; and  

18

WHEREAS, The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, chapter of DANK

19

celebrates its 30th anniversary during this calendar year; and

20

WHEREAS, To mark this momentous occasion, it is with great

21

pleasure that the City of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, receive the

22

distinguished honor of hosting the 2011 National Convention of

23

the German American National Congress; therefore be it

24

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize and

25

commemorate the 2011 National Convention of the German American

26

National Congress to be held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania,

27

October 27 through 30, 2011.
