| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Urging the Congress of the United States to declare March 31, |
2 | each year, a national holiday in honor of the late, great |
3 | farm worker leader Cesar E. Chavez. |
4 | WHEREAS, From humble beginnings in 1927, Cesar E. Chavez, |
5 | founder of the United Farm Workers of America, rose to be a |
6 | major force in American history, making him one of the heroic |
7 | figures of the 20th century; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Through personal sacrifice, Mr. Chavez focused |
9 | national attention on the plight of farm workers, making the |
10 | world aware of their demands for safe and fair working |
11 | conditions in the fields of our nation; and |
12 | WHEREAS, Millions of Americans from across the nation, of all |
13 | races and nationalities, joined Mr. Chavez in the movement for |
14 | farm workers' rights; and |
15 | WHEREAS, Mr. Chavez was also a champion for civil rights, |
16 | labor rights, voting rights and women's rights and was an early |
17 | environmentalist, warning the public of the devastating effects |

1 | of pesticides on both farm workers and consumers; and |
2 | WHEREAS, As a result of these and other valuable |
3 | contributions, ten states now celebrate Mr. Chavez's birthday, |
4 | March 31, as a holiday, including Arizona, California, Colorado, |
5 | Illinois, Michigan, New Mexico, Rhode Island, Texas, Utah and |
6 | Wisconsin, and countless schools, streets, libraries and other |
7 | public institutions have been named after Mr. Chavez; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Many cities have honored Mr. Chavez by establishing |
9 | an official city holiday on his birthday; and |
10 | WHEREAS, Mr. Chavez died April 23, 1993; and |
11 | WHEREAS, The Philadelphia City Council honored Mr. Chavez's |
12 | memory in 2004 by unanimously approving a resolution recognizing |
13 | April 23, 2004, as "Cesar Chavez Day" in the City of |
14 | Philadelphia; and |
15 | WHEREAS, The life of Mr. Chavez, who like Dr. Martin Luther |
16 | King, Jr., was an adherent to nonviolent civil disobedience, |
17 | serves as a model for all Americans; and |
18 | WHEREAS, The House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of |
19 | Pennsylvania call upon all the people of the Commonwealth of |
20 | Pennsylvania to celebrate the life of Cesar E. Chavez by |
21 | engaging in service, learning and community actions that |
22 | represent his legacy on his birthday and throughout the year; |
23 | therefore be it |
24 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the |
25 | Commonwealth of Pennsylvania urge the Congress and the President |
26 | of the United States to establish an official national holiday |
27 | and day of service, learning and action for Cesar E. Chavez on |
28 | March 31, each year; and be it further |
29 | RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to |
30 | the Cesar E. Chavez National Holiday Organization, Ms. Evelina |
