A RESOLUTION

Designating March 30 of each year as "Welcome Home Vietnam

2

Veterans Day."

WHEREAS, The Vietnam Conflict was fought from 1961 to 1975;

4

and

5

WHEREAS, The United States became involved in the Vietnam

6

Conflict because policymakers in the United States believed that

7

if South Vietnam fell to a Communist government, Communism would

8

spread throughout the rest of Southeast Asia; and

9

WHEREAS, In 1965, there were approximately 80,000 United

10

States troops in Vietnam, and by 1969, a peak of about 543,000

11

troops was reached; and

12

WHEREAS, More than 58,000 members of the United States Armed

Forces lost their lives in the Vietnam Conflict, and more than

2

300,000 were wounded; and

3

WHEREAS, According to the Commonwealth's military records,

4

more than 3,400 Pennsylvanians were killed in the Vietnam

5

Conflict and many more were listed as "missing in action"; and

6

WHEREAS, The uniquely divisive nature of the Vietnam Conflict

7

in the context of American history and the crossfire of debate

8

about the country's involvement in the conflict deprived many

9

members of the United States Armed Forces of public support and

10

appreciation for their patriotic service; and

11

WHEREAS, The bravery and service of our country's Vietnam

12

Conflict veterans should be recognized and honored; therefore be

13

it

14

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate March

15

30 of each year as "Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day" and urge

16

all public schools and educational institutions to conduct

17

exercises recognizing the contributions of all those involved in

18

the Vietnam Conflict and remember the sacrifices they made for

19

their country.
