| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Expressing condolences upon the death of the Reverend Doctor |
2 | George Macpherson Docherty, esteemed clergyman, former pastor |
3 | of the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington, |
4 | D.C., and father of the phrase "under God" in the Pledge of |
5 | Allegiance. |
6 | WHEREAS, The Reverend Doctor George Macpherson Docherty of |
7 | Alexandria, Huntingdon County, passed away on November 27, 2008; |
8 | and |
9 | WHEREAS, As pastor of the New York Avenue Presbyterian |
10 | Church, Reverend Doctor Docherty took two opportunities to |
11 | preach sermons advocating the insertion of the phrase "under |
12 | God" into the Pledge of Allegiance; and |
13 | WHEREAS, One of these sermons reached the ears of President |
14 | Dwight D. Eisenhower, who Rev. Dr. Docherty knew would be in the |

1 | congregation; and |
2 | WHEREAS, The sermon received praise from the President, |
3 | national press coverage and public response, and, as a result, |
4 | Congress enacted the inclusion of the words "under God," which |
5 | were first used officially on Flag Day, June 14, 1954; and |
6 | WHEREAS, Born in Scotland in 1911, Rev. Dr. Docherty |
7 | emigrated to the United States in 1950 and became a United |
8 | States citizen in 1960; and |
9 | WHEREAS, After serving parishes in Scotland from 1939 to |
10 | 1950, Rev. Dr. Docherty was called to Washington, D.C., to |
11 | succeed another Scotsman, Dr. Peter Marshall, as minister of the |
12 | New York Avenue Presbyterian Church, where he is remembered as a |
13 | vigorous preacher, an inspirational leader and a person deeply |
14 | involved in the Civil Rights Movement and in opposition to the |
15 | Vietnam Conflict; and |
16 | WHEREAS, After retiring in 1976, Rev. Dr. Docherty returned |
17 | to Scotland for 13 years, and in 1989, he returned to the United |
18 | States and settled in Huntingdon County, where he preached at |
19 | the Huntingdon Presbyterian Church; taught at Juniata College, |
20 | Virginia Episcopal Seminary and Washington and Lee University; |
21 | wrote numerous articles and edited several books, including his |
22 | autobiography "I Have Seen the Day"; and |
23 | WHEREAS, On November 3, 2002, the New York Avenue |
24 | Presbyterian Church honored Rev. Dr. Docherty by dedicating its |
25 | spiritual center as the George M. Docherty Center for |
26 | Congregational Life; and |
27 | WHEREAS, Rev. Dr. Docherty's last official duty was |
28 | performing the wedding ceremony of his daughter, Julie, to James |
29 | Jancosko on September 3, 2005, in the garden of his home in |
30 | Alexandria; and |

1 | WHEREAS, Rev. Dr. Docherty was predeceased by his first wife, |
2 | Mary, and is survived by his wife, Sue, and children Garth, |
3 | Julie and Bridget, their spouses and their children; and |
4 | WHEREAS, The many contributions of Rev. Dr. Docherty to the |
5 | Presbyterian Church and to the church universal, to his native |
6 | and adopted countries, and to the people of Washington, D.C., |
7 | Virginia and this Commonwealth are reknown and invaluable; |
8 | therefore be it |
9 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives express |
10 | condolences upon the death of the Reverend Doctor George |
11 | Macpherson Docherty, esteemed clergyman, former pastor of the |
12 | New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C., and |
13 | father of the phrase "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance. |
