| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Recognizing November 10, 2010, as "Marine Corps Day" in |
2 | Pennsylvania in honor of the United States Marine Corps' |
3 | 235th anniversary. |
4 | WHEREAS, The United States Marine Corps was founded as the |
5 | Continental Marines by a resolution passed by the Second |
6 | Continental Congress on November 10, 1775; and |
7 | WHEREAS, The Marine Corps has fought with great courage on |
8 | six continents and in every conflict in American history, |
9 | including the Revolutionary War, the American Civil War, World |
10 | War I, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War; and |
11 | WHEREAS, The Marine Corps is serving in support of Operation |

1 | Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and Operation Iraqi Freedom; and |
2 | WHEREAS, The Marine Corps has fought valiantly in defense of |
3 | the United States and its citizens and principles; and |
4 | WHEREAS, There are approximately 201,000 active duty and |
5 | 100,000 reserve members of the Marine Corps; and |
6 | WHEREAS, Marines recognize the Marine Corps as a tradition |
7 | built on time-honored values and principles; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Marines truly embody the motto of the Marine Corps: |
9 | "Semper Fidelis" translates from Latin as "always faithful," and |
10 | signifies the defense of freedom and democracy worldwide; and |
11 | WHEREAS, "Raising of the Flag on Iwo Jima," the famous |
12 | photograph by Joe Rosenthal, will always symbolize the triumph |
13 | and glory of the Marine Corps; and |
14 | WHEREAS, The Marine Corps' Air Ground Task Force integrates a |
15 | ground combat element, an aviation combat element and a |
16 | logistics combat element under a common command element; and |
17 | WHEREAS, Known for its amphibious and land capabilities, the |
18 | Air Ground Task Force operates independently or as part of a |
19 | larger coalition; and |
20 | WHEREAS, During World War I, Marines fought their famed |
21 | battle at Belleau Wood, establishing their reputation of |
22 | toughness and fierceness; and |
23 | WHEREAS, The Marine Corps played a central role in the |
24 | liberation of the Pacific Islands during World War II; and |
25 | WHEREAS, The momentum of the Korean War shifted when the |
26 | Marine Corps, in conjunction with the Navy, launched a massive |
27 | amphibious attack at Inchon, surprising the North Koreans by |
28 | putting thousands of United States troops behind enemy lines; |
29 | and |
30 | WHEREAS, The Marine Corps participated in major offensives of |

1 | the Vietnam War, engaging in guerrilla warfare, implementing |
2 | unconventional techniques for counterinsurgency and working as |
3 | military advisors to the Republic of Vietnam Marine Corps; and |
4 | WHEREAS, From 1990 to 1992, Marines participated in Operation |
5 | Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm, leading the liberation |
6 | of Kuwait and the defeat of Iraqi forces; and |
7 | WHEREAS, The Marine Corps continues to make significant |
8 | contributions to the war on terrorism as part of Operation |
9 | Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom; and |
10 | WHEREAS, The Marine Corps supports peacekeeping missions and |
11 | humanitarian operations in countries such as Liberia, |
12 | Bangladesh, the Philippines and Somalia; and |
13 | WHEREAS, Marine Corps Order No. 47, Series 192, written by |
14 | Major Commandant General John A. Lejeune, established the |
15 | mandatory celebration of the Marine Corps' anniversary; |
16 | therefore be it |
17 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize |
18 | November 10, 2010, as "Marine Corps Day" in Pennsylvania in |
19 | honor of the United States Marine Corps' 235th anniversary. |
