A RESOLUTION

Recognizing Mastery Charter Schools for progress and excellence

2

in student performance and school choice in the City of

3

Philadelphia.

4

WHEREAS, Since its inception in 2001 as a nonprofit school

5

operator in unique partnership with the School District of

6

Philadelphia, Mastery Charter Schools has worked to transform

7

four underperforming district high schools and three district

8

elementary schools in Center City, South Philadelphia, West

9

Philadelphia, Frankford and Germantown locations; and

10

WHEREAS, With the goal of preparing students for higher

11

education, Mastery Charter Schools has exhibited outstanding

12

diligence in staff recruitment and training and curriculum

13

development; and

14

WHEREAS, Mastery Charter Schools has improved school safety

15

and refurbished school facilities to further facilitate student

16

achievement; and

17

WHEREAS, Mastery Charter Schools has instituted a longer

school day and longer school year to advance its rigorous

2

curriculum; and

3

WHEREAS, Students must follow a strict behavior code and

4

perform at grade level or above to advance; and

5

WHEREAS, At the National Urban League Centennial Conference

6

in July 2010, President Barack Obama highlighted Mastery Charter

7

Schools' reforms and academic gains; and

8

WHEREAS, Oprah Winfrey's Angel Network has presented Mastery

9

Charter Schools with a $1 million grant for expansion in the

10

City of Philadelphia; therefore be it

11

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize Mastery

12

Charter Schools for progress and excellence in student

13

performance and school choice in the City of Philadelphia; and

14

be it further

15

RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to

16

Mastery Charter Schools, 5700 Wayne Avenue, Philadelphia, PA
