| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Commending the 164 local YMCAs for providing outstanding |
2 | community services and recognizing the month of May 2009 as |
3 | "YMCA Appreciation Month" in Pennsylvania. |
4 | WHEREAS, YMCAs are collectively the largest nonprofit |
5 | organization in this Commonwealth, with more YMCAs having been |
6 | founded here than in any other state; and |
7 | WHEREAS, YMCAs are volunteer founded, volunteer based and |
8 | volunteer led, with more than 25,000 Commonwealth residents |
9 | volunteering as coaches, mentors, program leaders, instructors |
10 | and 3,500 as board members; and |
11 | WHEREAS, YMCAs are charitable nonprofit organizations |
12 | providing access to everyone regardless of their ability to pay, |
13 | so that all persons have the opportunity to be a part of the |
14 | YMCA family and benefit from a wide variety of programs and |
15 | services; and |
16 | WHEREAS, The YMCAs in this Commonwealth collectively serve |
17 | more than 1 million people of all ages, races, genders, creeds, |

1 | religions, backgrounds and economic levels; and |
2 | WHEREAS, The YMCAs in this Commonwealth collectively raise |
3 | nearly $50 million for scholarships, subsidies and other |
4 | community services each year; and |
5 | WHEREAS, YMCAs are collectively the largest provider of child |
6 | care services, with 128 YMCAs serving more than 19,000 children |
7 | every day; and |
8 | WHEREAS, YMCAs are leading the fight against childhood |
9 | obesity through health and wellness programs, such as Activate |
10 | America, and partnering with the Centers for Disease Control, |
11 | foundations and hospitals to increase the fitness levels of |
12 | adults and families in this Commonwealth; and |
13 | WHEREAS, Pennsylvania YMCAs operate nine resident camps and |
14 | 130 day camps, serving nearly 45,000 children, youth and |
15 | families; and |
16 | WHEREAS, YMCAs are battling homelessness by providing long- |
17 | term and short-term housing; and |
18 | WHEREAS, Pennsylvania YMCAs collaborate with community health |
19 | and wellness coalitions, juvenile courts, schools, churches, |
20 | local and county governments and civic organizations to provide |
21 | gang prevention, environmental education, international |
22 | programs, water safety, mentoring and tutoring programs, |
23 | antidrug and alcohol education, teen leadership and civic |
24 | engagement, character development, structured family activities |
25 | and a variety of other programs for children, youth, adults and |
26 | seniors; and |
27 | WHEREAS, Forty-two percent of YMCA members and program |
28 | participants are under 18 years of age, and nearly 15% of YMCA |
29 | members are over 55 years of age; and |
30 | WHEREAS, The YMCA recognizes the public trust placed in them |

1 | as a charity, they meet the highest standards of governance, |
2 | ethics and accountability, and have established themselves as |
3 | leaders in the nonprofit community by improving their own |
4 | measure of accountability, transparency and community benefit; |
5 | and |
6 | WHEREAS, All YMCA activities incorporate the YMCA core values |
7 | of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility and the YMCA |
8 | seeks to put Christian values into practice through programs |
9 | that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all; therefore be |
10 | it |
11 | RESOLVED, That the Senate commend the volunteers and staff of |
12 | the YMCA for their service to the people of this Commonwealth |
13 | and their communities and recognize May 2009 as "YMCA |
14 | Appreciation Month" in Pennsylvania. |
