| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Recognizing the volunteers participating in Keep Pennsylvania |
2 | Beautiful's "Great American Cleanup of PA," March 1 through |
3 | May 31, 2011. |
4 | WHEREAS, The Great American Cleanup of PA is celebrating its |
5 | ninth anniversary of involving people all across this |
6 | Commonwealth in the cleanup of litter and trash along our |
7 | roadsides, streams, beaches, parks, forests and neighborhoods to |
8 | make our communities clean and beautiful; and |
9 | WHEREAS, Since 2003, more than 1,100,000 volunteers have |
10 | participated in the cleanups; last year alone, more than 186,000 |
11 | individuals, members of Adopt-A-Highway groups, municipalities, |
12 | conservation, school and youth groups, businesses, hunting and |
13 | fishing clubs, community and civic organizations and sports |
14 | teams were involved; and |
15 | WHEREAS, These cleanups have resulted in removing more than |
16 | 54 million pounds of litter and waste from Pennsylvania's |
17 | landscape since 2003, including 12 million pounds of litter |
18 | during nearly 5,000 registered events in all of this |
19 | Commonwealth's 67 counties last year; and |

1 | WHEREAS, The Great American Cleanup of PA was organized with |
2 | the help of a broad partnership of State agencies, nonprofit |
3 | groups, businesses and other associations, including Keep |
4 | America Beautiful, the Department of Environmental Protection |
5 | and the Department of Transportation, Pennsylvania Beverage |
6 | Association, Pennsylvania Food Merchants Association, |
7 | Pennsylvania Waste Industries Association, Waste Management, |
8 | Keystone Sanitary Landfill, Steel Recycling Institute and the |
9 | American Chemistry Council; and |
10 | WHEREAS, The Department of Environmental Protection and the |
11 | Pennsylvania Waste Industries Association, including Keystone |
12 | Sanitary Landfill and Waste Management, arrange for the free |
13 | disposal of trash collected during the special "Let's Pick It Up |
14 | PA-Everyday" initiative from April 16 through 30, for groups |
15 | registered in the Great American Cleanup of PA; and |
16 | WHEREAS, The Department of Environmental Protection and the |
17 | Department of Transportation and national Keep America Beautiful |
18 | corporate sponsors provide free supplies to participants; and |
19 | WHEREAS, In 2011, the national Great American Cleanup |
20 | initiative of Keep America Beautiful held its kick-off event in |
21 | Philadelphia to showcase the city's 250 volunteer cleanup |
22 | events; and |
23 | WHEREAS, In 2010, Keep America Beautiful recognized the |
24 | Department of Transportation for its exemplary contributions and |
25 | support of the Great American Cleanup of PA and the national |
26 | Great American Cleanup for the eighth year in a row; and |
27 | WHEREAS, In 2010, Keep America Beautiful recognized Keep |
28 | Pennsylvania Beautiful for 100% county participation in the |
29 | Great American Cleanup of PA; and therefore be it |
30 | RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the more than 186,000 |

1 | volunteers, Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful and all the |
2 | participating and supporting agencies and organizations of the |
3 | "Great American Cleanup of PA" and "Let's Pick It Up PA- |
4 | Everyday" initiatives for their contributions to keep |
5 | Pennsylvania beautiful. |
